The sequel to 2019’s Joker has already been lofted to huge expectations, after the original managed to shatter the mold of comic book films. With multiple nominations including Best Film nod at the Academy Awards and a Best Actor win for Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, director Todd Phillips will be returning with his leading man to continue the story of the iconic DC villain.
Earlier this year, Phillips confirmed that the sequel will be titled “Joker: Folie À Deux”, with the cast further confirmed to feature new faces in Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland, and Lady Gaga, who plays opposite Phoenix’s Joker as Harley Quinn.

It was also stated that the sequel will receive a major upgrade with its budget, as director Todd Phillips will have $150 million at his disposal. Most of the budget will go towards complicated sequences, as the film is expected to be a musical.
With the film set to be a musical, Joker 2 will be undergoing a major tonal shift from the original. According to TV and film insider Grace Randolph, the musical sequences are set inside the head of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn.
Lady Gaga’s arrival as Harley Quinn will add a new romantic element for the Joker, as the two characters have been part of toxic relationships in several comic book arcs. Furthermore, the film might also showcase Quinn’s shift in personality from Arkham Asylum psychiatrist to the crazed criminal as well.
Joker: Folie à Deux arrives in theatres on October 4, 2024.
