James Cameron Denies the ‘Offensive’ Rumors About Him Making a Titanic Submersible Disaster Film

Titanic director James Cameron has denied the “offensive” rumors that said he was in talks to make a disaster film about the tragic story of OceanGate’s Titan submersible.

Cameron took to Twitter to set the record straight once and for all, confirming he has no plans to ever make a film about the sub that imploded and killed all five people aboard on its way to see the wreck of the Titanic.

“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be,” Cameron wrote.

The director, who has gone on 33 submersible dives to the wreck of the Titanic himself, did give a few interviews about the Titan sub, and that appears to be all the world will be getting from him on the matter.

Speaking to ABC News, Cameron said he was “struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field.”

OceanGate’s Titan sub began its expedition to the wreck of the Titanic on June 18, 2023, and it went missing about an hour and 45 minutes into its journey. After four days, a debris field was discovered that led officials to believe a catastrophic implosion had occurred and that all five passengers were killed.

Cameron most recently directed Avatar: The Way of Water, and you can watch his 1997 film Titanic on Netflix now. There was a bit of backlash surrounding Titanic recently, however, as it was added back to Netflix on July 1 and some argued that was much too soon after the sub disaster.
