IPL 2022: KKR retain Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy

IPL 2022 Retentions: Kolkata Knight Riders retained 4 players, including two overseas stars Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, spending Rs 42 crore ahead of the mega auction. Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy have also been retained by the 2-time champions.

Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday announced their 4 retention for IPL 2022. The 2-time champions held back West Indies all-rounder Anrdre Russell, mystery spinner Sunil Narine along with Indian players Vekatesh Iyer and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

Kolkata Knight Riders have spent Rs 42 crore on the retentions ahead of the mega auction, which will be held before the new season. KKR have managed to retain the core that has served them well over the years as the likes of Sunil Narine who was part of their winning teams.

However, KKR haven’t retained the likes of their captain Eoin Morgan, opener Shubman Gill, former captain Dinesh Karthik and Pat Cummins, who was the costliest overseas player in the past. Domestic names like Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi and former U-19 World Cup stars Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti.

KKR also did not retain veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh and left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy. The former champions had a slump but under Morgan, they reached the final in IPL 2021 in the UAE. KKR lost to Chennai Super Kings despite a stunning fightback in the second of the new season.
