IPL 2021: Ambati Rayudu’s quick 72, Jasprit Bumrah’s most expensive spell – CSK break records vs MI in Delhi

Chennai Super Kings came up with a power-packed batting performance on Saturday as they set a series of records against Mumbai Indians in Match 27 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Chennai post 218 for 4 in 20 overs, their highest-ever total against the defending champions in the history of IPL.

Chennai Super Kings also became the first team in the history of the IPL to have two 100-plus partnerships in the same match. There were two different phases of big-hitting masterclasses as Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali helped CSK race past 100 in the 11th over with a 108-run stand in just 61 balls.

Towards the end, it was Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja demolishing the Mumbai Indians bowling attack with a 102-run stand in just 48 balls. CSK hit 82 runs in the last 5 overs as they sit comfortably on top of the list of teams with the fastest scoring rate at the death (12.85 runs per over).

Faf du Plessis became the first Chennai Super Kings batsman to hit 4 successive fifties. The CSK opener started slow but picked up pace in style to hit 50 off just 28 balls. He got fine company from Moeen Ali who took on the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult with a lot of ease. Ali finished with 36-ball 58.

CSK stuttered in the middle overs as they lost the wickets of du Plessis, Ali and Suresh Raina (2) in a span of 2 overs with Kieron Pollard picking up 2 wickets in as many balls.

However, Ambati Rayudu made sure CSK finished strong with a 72 not out in just 27 balls. Rayudu brought p his fifty in just 20 balls, the third-fastest by a CSK batsman in the IPL. Rayudu hit as many as 7 sixes as Chennai finished with a total of 17 sixes.

Bumrah’s most expensive IPL spell

On the flipside, Jasprit Bumrah did not have a good night as he registered his most expensive spell in the history of IPL. Bumrah conceded 56 runs in 4 overs despite picking up Ali’s wicket.

Meanwhile, this was also the first instance in the IPL where a team’s top three bowlers conceded as many as 146 runs as Bumrah, Trent Boult (42 for 1) and Dhawal Kulkarni (0 for 46) were taken to the cleaners.
