Ahead of the 2023 Cricket World Cup final scheduled for Sunday (19 November), hotel prices in Ahmedabad have skyrocketed to over Rs 2 lakh for the night of the match.

According to news agency PTI, the prices for some five-star hotels including Hyatt Regency and ITC Narmada have soared beyond Rs 2lakh on match night.

“There is enthusiasm for the World Cup final not only in India, but people from abroad including places like Dubai, Australia, and South Africa want to come to watch the match,” Narendra Somani, the president of Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of Gujarat told PTI.
“There are 5,000 rooms in three-star and five-star hotels in Ahmedabad, while the number for entire Gujarat is 10,000. The capacity of the Narendra Modi Stadium is over 1.20 lakh people and we expect that 30,000 to 40,000 people will come from outside to watch the match,” he added.

Apart from this, even the rates of non-star hotels have increased upto seven times. For example, Hotel Crown, whose rates are usually Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 per night increased their rates to Rs 20,000 per night.
It’s not just the hotel rates that have soared. Exorbitant flight rates have also caused concern among the public. Flight rates have increased by 200-300 per cent for round trips to Ahmedabad.
“Due to high demand for Ahmedabad, airfares for flights to the city from almost all places have risen three to five times. Cricket fans are ready to pay the high prices to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and witness India play the finals in their home country. The demand for hotels and tickets is on the rise,” Manubhai Pancholi was quoted as saying by PTI.
According to a report in The Hindu, flight rates from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad have gone upto Rs 84,000. Meanwhile, flights from Delhi to Ahmedabad will cost Rs 15,000.
Flights from Pune to Ahmedabad have also witnessed rising air fares. According to Times of India, a one-way direct flight from Pune to Ahmedabad are costing more than Rs 20,000 whereas one-stop flight fares start from Rs 17,000.
India last won the World Cup in 2011, when the country last hosted the tournament. The Men in Blue are undefeated in the tournament with 10 wins in as many games, but face an Australia side who are on an eight-match winning run after losing the first two games.
