In Numbers: Record breaking India vs England 5th Test | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Joe Root (142*) and Jonny Bairstow (114*) led England’s stunning fighback with an unbeaten 269-run stand and inflicted a seven-wicket defeat on India in the rescheduled fifth Test to draw the five-match series 2-2.
Let’s recap some of the big numbers and records that the five-day action produced at Edgbaston in the fifth Test:
* The combination of Rishabh Pant (146 & 57) and Ravindra Jadeja (104 & 23) accounted for 330 of the tourists’ runs – almost half of what India scored (416 & 245) in their two innings combined.
* The 222-run stand between Pant and Jadeja in the first innings is the joint-highest partnership for the sixth wicket in Test cricket for India away from home. They equalled Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin’s record which was set in 1997 against South Africa in Cape Town.
* Similarly, the duo of Jonny Bairstow (106 & 114*) and Joe Root (31 & 142*) scored the bulk of runs for England – 393 in total of the team’s 662 overall runs.
* Pant’s 89-ball century on Day 1 of the match is the fastest by an Indian wicket-keeper in Test cricket ever.
* Pant also became the first wicketkeeper batter to post a hundred and a fifty in the same Test vs England in England, apart from becoming the first wicketkeeper batter to manage 200-plus runs against England in England.
* Pant’s total tally of 203 runs (146 & 57) is the highest by an Indian batsman in a Test at this venue (Edgbaston), bettering Virat Kohli’s tally of 200 (149 & 51 runs) in 2018.
* England recorded their highest successful run chase in Test cricket (378), bettering their previous record of 359 against Australia at Leeds in 2019.
* This is also the highest successful run chase against India in Tests ever.
* This is also the highest successful run chase at Edgbaston in Test cricket. South Africa held the previous record of 281 against England in 2008.
* Jasprit Bumrah’s haul of 3-68 in the first innings helped him become the Indian bowler with most number of wickets during a Test series in England (23). He surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record of 19 wickets during a five-match series in 2014.
* Bumrah the batter piled on a lot of misery on England pacer Stuart Broad bludgeoning him for 29 runs in an over to own the new world record of scoring most runs in an over in Tests. Broad conceded 35 runs in total including 6 extras in the over, of which 29 came off Bumrahs bat. In the process Bumrah broke the previous record of 28 runs scored off the bat in an over in Test cricket, which was held by Brian Lara.
* India’s sorry tale at Edgbaston continues with another defeat at the venue. They still don’t have any wins on this ground. They have now lost seven matches out of eight games with one draw at Edgbaston.
* England and India are now joint holders of the Pataudi Trophy, with England denying India a series win. The last time India won a Test series on English soil was in 2007, under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy.
