Around 170 members, from around the world and across batches – the eldest one being from the 1964 batch and the youngest who graduated in 2019 – all from the hostel have contributed around Rs 5.5 crore to renovate and enhance the hostel facilities with a state-of-the-art study area and toilet facilities. While alumni from different batches have made several contributions in the past, this is probably the first initiative, where alumni of a particular hostel have come together for the project to improve the quality of life in hostel 5, also called as the Penthouse by students now. The project is a joint initiative between the institute and the alumni association.
Dhananjay Saheba, a board member of the IIT-B Alumni Association, said that the idea came up when one of his classmates from the batch of 77 visited the hostel and shared some pictures. “Many of us wanted to do something for the hostel at that time. We decided to appeal to everyone who has graduated from the hostel over the years. The idea came up somewhere in mid-December and by February we met our target of Rs 5.5 crore,” he said. With over 200 rooms at the hostel, the group had planned to reach out to over 2,000 alumni. The plan is to build additional toilets in the hostels and a common study area with wi-fi coverage and other state-of-the-art facilities, he said. He said that the hostel life played a critical role in their education and development and it is where they have formed some deepest and meaningful friendships.
Director of the institute, Subhasis Chaudhuri, said, “Current H-5 students have expressed keen interest in the enhancements as they will significantly improve the quality of hostel life. The infrastructure enhancement will go a long way to further the wellbeing of students.”
