I was devastated for three days after NZ lost the 2019 WC final, but was also delighted for the likes of Jos Buttler & Joe Root: Shane Bond | Cricket News – Times of India

The 2019 ICC ODI World Cup final was perhaps hands down the most heartbreaking match in cricketing history. The clash between England and New Zealand ended in a tie and then the subsequent Super Over was also tied. England were declared winners on the boundary countback rule, because they had hit more boundaries.
This was the second consecutive time (2015 and 2019) that the Kiwis were runners-up in an ODI World Cup final. But the 2019 final definitely hurt more. It was in fact a heartbreak that was felt by people and fans across the world.
One of the standout features though in the aftermath of that painful loss, was the sheer composure and grace that was shown by the Kiwi cricketers, their government officials and others. They took the loss in their stride and moved on.
Talking about the memories of the 2019 final, former New Zealand cricketer and one of the fastest bowlers to have ever played the game of cricket, Shane Bond recalled how he was absolutely “gutted”. Bond recalled his memories of that final on episode 2 of Times of India’s new sports podcast Sportscast.
“I doubt if the boys would watch it (2019 World Cup final). I wouldn’t if I was involved in that game. I was on holiday (at that time). I was on my way to San Francisco airport to fly to the Netherlands. And I sat up all through the night in the USA and I was going through security and had to put my phone through security when that last ball was being bowled and had to find the result out. And I was gutted. I was devastated for three days. I was quiet. I knew the impact a win in the World Cup would have on our country and in the sport in our country. But I expected the reactions that we got from our players at the end of the game.” Bond said on TOI Sportscast.
Bond also talked about how, despite being devastated after the final, he was also happy for some of the English players he knows well and is close to. Bond, who took 259 international wickets in his career feels the IPL has played a big role in bringing players from different countries closer and turning them into friends.
“That’s the beauty of T20 cricket and what the IPL has brought about. There’s a real close relationship between the players. You would have seen in recent days. Trent Boult has talked about Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma. All these guys now are really good mates and so as much as we were gutted, I also had guys who I had been involved with – Jos Buttler, Joe Root, who I was delighted for, because they are great guys and I had a personal relationship with them. I would have expected the same from England. It’s heartbreaking for even a neutral, watching any sport to see the devastation of someone who loses a game that’s that close in any final. It’s really hard to watch….I don’t think there’s any sport as exciting as cricket when it comes down to close finishes like that.” Shane Bond said on TOI Sportscast.
The ICC eventually scrapped the contentious boundary countback rule in October 2019. The new rule that’s been put in place states that in global tournament knockout matches, in case of a tie in the first Super Over, Super Overs will be repeated, till there is a clear winner. Super Overs have also been incorporated in every game in both the 50 over and 20 over World Cups. Previously they were in place only in the knockout matches.
