11 matches, 2 wins, 9 losses – that is Mumbai Indians’ story this IPL season so far. Their heavy 52 run loss to KKR on Monday was another sad reminder of the state the most successful IPL team of all time finds itself in. They are at the bottom of the points table, already out of the playoffs race and at best can hope for a seventh place finish.
It’s no secret now that MI really don’t have a whole bunch of match winners on their roster currently. Suryakumar Yadav now being ruled out of the rest of the tournament with an injury which he sustained in the match vs Gujarat Titans on May 6 is another body blow for Rohit Sharma and co.
Former India captain and IPL commentator Anjum Chopra was a guest on Times of India’s sports podcast Sportscast on April 29, and talked about what she feels is the fundamental aspect of Mumbai’s woes this season, post a change in the complexion of the team.
“The Pandya brothers are missing, Quinton de Kock at the top is missing. They don’t have Trent Boult as a seamer who made such an impact as well and they have had to fall back on their seasoned campaigners. They are just not clicking as a team. Something or the other is leaking or conceding too much in the bowling department or in the batting department, the form has just not been there.” Anjum Chopra said on TOI Sportscast.
Suryakumar, who scored 303 runs in 8 matches, at an average of 43.29, with 3 half centuries, was one of the few silver linings for the team this season, along with young Dewald Brevis, who is definitely a player to watch out for. But MI haven’t clicked as a unit overall and the powers that be will have to sit down and draw up a clear-cut strategy for next season and Anjum feels that could involve change in personnel.
“The kind of dismissals I have seen with the Mumbai batters – of course Surya has been in form – but he came in later, he was nursing an injury. Things haven’t really settled down. I certainly feel there will be a few more changes in the setup, going into next year’s IPL. They might want to get a few new players in, they might want to let go of a few as well to have a better balance to the side, because they can’t continue in this fashion.” Anjum Chopra said on TOI Sportscast.
