House of the Dragon Producer Has No Idea How Daemon Became an ‘Internet Boyfriend’

House of the Dragon villain Daemon Targaryen is now the object of internet thirst… and producers have no idea why.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sarah Hess says that the outpouring of love for Daemon online makes no sense.

“He’s become Internet Boyfriend in a way that baffles me,” said Hess. “Not that Matt isn’t incredibly charismatic and wonderful, and he’s incredible in the role. But Daemon himself is… I don’t want him to be my boyfriend!”

The internet, it seems, would disagree…

Daemon Targaryen is one of the show’s highlights, played perfectly by Matt Smith.

But a perfect partner he ain’t. After all, he may have stood up for his wife, Rhaenyra, more recently, but just a few episodes ago he murdered his previous wife simply out of convenience. Brutal.

“I’m a little baffled how they’re all, ‘Oh, daddy!’,” said Hess. “I’m just like: ‘Really?’ How — in what way — was he a good partner, father or brother — to anybody? You got me. He ain’t Paul Rudd.”

Since his first appearance, Game of Thrones fans have been enamored with Daemon, and for some, the thirst only increases as Daemon’s actions get more questionable.

And fellow producer Clare Kilner kind of gets it.

“I just love the fact people are so involved with these characters, and I think that’s part of the fun of it,” she said. “One minute you like someone, and the next minute you like someone else. But I’m not surprised. Matt is such a risk-taker in his performances and he’s got that little smile and, you know … you can’t help it! He is charismatic. People love a baddie. But I don’t think he’s particularly a good father or a good brother.”

Still, it looks as though Daemon fans might find the upcoming season finale a little… challenging.

“We will see a different side of him,” said Hess. “And right now, we’re writing season two and figuring out, what is the nature of his relationship with Rhaenyra? There are many interpretations [in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood] to that.”
