Hogwarts Legacy throws a lot at you as you play the game, and some things may be easier than others to pick up on. So it can often be easy to forget a few things here and there. But don’t worry because we’ve got your back with 11 tips and tricks that’ll make your wizarding adventures a bit easier no matter what difficulty you’re playing on. From how to easily spot collectibles to keeping your Galleon balance healthy, here’s how to get a running start at Hogwarts.
Listen for the chime when using Revelio
Reveilo is a spell you get early in-game–think of it like magic Detective Vision–and it’ll quickly become your best friend. What makes this spell stand out from the others is that it’ll reveal everything that’s nearby you. Lootable items will be gold, enemies will be red, and puzzle items will appear blue. Even collectibles may briefly reveal themselves visually, but the chime you may hear when pinging your immediate area is location-based, so follow the noise to often find hidden items like Guide Pages, gear, or puzzles to solve.
Watch your step
Yes, even though you are a wizard who can make something appear out of nothing, that doesn’t mean a large cliff can’t hurt you. Although the game does a good job of setting up invisible walls in specific areas to avoid this, some areas still allow you to fall from a great distance. If you’re going to take a shortcut, make sure you have the potions to heal yourself.
Transmog to keep your magical drip
Hogwarts Legacy has a Transmog system in place. This will allow you to change your clothes’ appearance without affecting the stats. So if you have a robe with good stats, but looks ugly, don’t worry. If you select Change Appearance, you can alter how it looks to fit your fashion sense.
Change the time of day like, well, magic
If you prefer to travel during the night or the day, you can make that happen. All you need to do is pull up your map and press the WAIT button. Once you press it, you’ll be informed that the time will change. This is especially helpful if you’re looking for moon collectibles, as they only appear at night.
Most dialogue options will have the same outcome
You’ll usually have a list of options to pick from whenever you talk to someone. It doesn’t matter what you say because most of them will usually have the same outcome. It just depends on if you want to be a bully to your classmates or not, as the options tend to boil down to being kind or being rude.
Sell clothes to earn money
Selling gear is a great way to earn fast cash. As you play through the game, you’ll pick up gear left and right, most of which you won’t use. Instead of destroying the gear, visit any shop and sell it in Hogsmeade.
Time stops while looking at your spells
If you ever find yourself in a battle with spells that aren’t helping, switch them out for ones that will. While in the spell menu, time will stop, and you won’t have to worry about the nearby enemies attacking you.
You can stupefy other enemies that aren’t attacking you
While blocking an attack, you can perform Stupefy on the enemy that you just blocked. But if you’re aiming at another enemy, you can use that spell on them instead of the intended target.
You can’t take damage while using ancient magic
While in the middle of a fight, you’ll be able to perform ancient magic attacks. These spells deal a lot of damage and can only be used a couple of times before needing to be refilled. If you can perform it, do it because while you’re in the animation, your character won’t take any damage.
Get to class
As you progress through the main story, you’ll learn several spells. But there’ll be even more spells that you can learn by doing your Professor’s assignments. All the assignments vary, but once they’re done, you’ll have a cutscene of you and all your classmates. Once the cutscene is done, your Professor will teach you a new spell.
Complete Merlin Challenges
Merlin Challenges become available as you progress through the main story. You’ll stumble across them fairly early, and once they’re completed, you’ll be able to carry more gear. This is extremely valuable because you can’t carry much gear when you first start the game–certainly not with all those gargantuan tomes you’ll be hauling to class.
Hogwarts Legacy is developed by Avalanche Software, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game has been embroiled in controversy due to transphobic remarks from Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Although she is not personally involved with its development, she stands to profit from its success. For more, read our in-depth article on how Rowling’s comments have impacted the trans community.
