News of celebrated cricket coach Tarak Sinha passing away in November last year at the age of 71 plunged the entire Indian cricket fraternity into a state of mourning.
Sinha, who established and ran the very famous and successful Sonnet Cricket Club in Delhi, since 1969, was a father-figure to all his wards. The legendary coach refined and polished the raw skills of multiple players who went on to play for state teams and the National Indian teams. The likes of Surinder Khanna, Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Sharma, Anjum Chopra, Ashish Nehra, Aakash Chopra, Atul Wassan, Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant, among others, were all coached by Sinha.
Over the years, Sinha, who worked at the PGDAV college, in the University of Delhi when he started the Sonnet club, came to be fondly referred to as ‘Ustaadji’ by his students and others.
One of his most famous wards, former India captain, Anjum Chopra was a guest on Times of India’s sports podcast Sportscast recently and recalled the extraordinary contribution of Tarak Sinha to Indian cricket, echoing the sentiment that Sinha was more than just a coach – he was a guardian, who understood what it takes to handle talented youngsters, who are also in many ways, just regular kids.
“All the words which you used to describe Tarak sir, he was everything – at least to me and I am sure, whether it is to Rishabh Pant or Aakash Chopra or Ashish Nehra – he was that. His contribution to me as a cricketer, to me as a human being to becoming an all-rounded sportsperson, his contribution has been immense and it will never be forgotten. Just the other day we were having a chat with a group of club cricketers and every word that we spoke, every line that we shared had Sir’s name in it. His contribution can never be taken away. ” Anjum Chopra said on TOI Sportscast.
Sinha also served as the coach of the Indian senior women’s cricket team from 2001-2002. At that time Anjum Chopra had just become the captain of the team. Anjum, who is currently doing commentary for IPL 2022 has very fond memories of Sinha from India’s tour of South Africa in 2002, when the Indian team won a historic one-off Test.
“I was leading the Indian team in South Africa where we won the first Test series in South Africa. That was in 2002, the first time I became the captain. There were a few tactical decisions which I had to take. Of course it was in consultation with the coach of the Indian team, late Mr. Tarak Sinha. It was a very nice team effort. He led from the front, as a leader, being the coach of the team. He gave me all the confidence and the leeway to go out there and take those decisions. It just worked very well in our favour. The Indian team rarely used to score 400 runs in a Test match and we had hardly won anything abroad, so everything came together perfectly and we won. A few moments like these always remain in the memory, in a happy space.” Anjum Chopra further said on TOI Sportscast.
Tarak Sinha coached cricketers across multiple generations and touched the lives of numerous cricketers in one way or the other. He received the prestigious Dronacharya award for his years of coaching service in 2018.
“The generations that he has touched upon, if we are able to do justice to his legacy and take his legacy forward – the present generation or the one after that might play sport might not know him as a person, but our idea is to do such good work that his work is carried forward. The name and the legacy must be carried forward. He (Tarak Sinha) has been that kind of a factor in Indian cricket, he knew how to get the best out of a person.” Anjum Chopra further said on TOI Sportscast
