High Court asks Andhra government to consider taking control of private hospitalsA division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday advised the state government to consider taking control of private hospitals in a bid to expand the treatment and healthcare access to Covid-19 patients.

Hearing a set of public interest litigations filed by advocate Sunkara Rajendra Prasad and others, the bench comprising Justices C Praveen Kumar and K Lalitha asked the government to provide comprehensive information to patients on the availability of hospital beds.

The high court has also asked the state government to consider setting up isolation centres for Covid-19 infected people in cities and towns.

It advised the government to also consider taking control of private ambulance services to contain them from collecting exorbitant charges and availing of the services of final-year nursing students to address staff shortages in hospitals.

The high court asked the Andhra government to provide additional toll-free numbers on healthcare services and consider releasing periodic health bulletins on the condition of patients undergoing treatment.

The government counsel submitted to the court that the number of Covid-19 hospitals in the state has increased to 680 from 650 in the recent period.

He said private hospitals were not coming forward to convert them into Covid-19 hospitals as an increased number of their staff members were getting affected by the virus.

Faulting the Union and state governments for several lapses in the policies to contain the spread of Covid-19 and treatment, the high court served notices on them seeking details on the matter. The next hearing is on May 20.

When the court enquired about the results of the 18-hours-a-day curfew being implemented in the state, the government council said it yielded a positive result of breaking the chain of the coronavirus spread.
