Legendary game director Hideo Kojima will be in charge of the Obi commentary on the upcoming Lycoris Recoil Ordinary Days spinoff novel which is set in the world of the ongoing anime.
An Obi is the paper that wraps around the cover of a Japanese book for aesthetic purposes. It is something unique to the culture of Japanese literature. The obi features the introduction to the book, catchphrases, and promotional excerpts. It plays a very important role in attracting the interest of readers. Often within the Obi are recommendations from bookstore clerks and celebrities. Kojima has previously commented on literature, like the novel “Comrade Girl, Shoot the Enemy” which later turned into a national bestseller.
Lycoris Recoil tells the story of Takina Inoue, a high school girl working as a member of Lycoris, an all-female group of assassins and spies. Inoue ends up disobeying direct orders to save a colleague and is transferred with agent Chisato Nishikigi to an undercover cafe called “LycoReco” as a result. Kojima made the comment “Recoil my Lyco genes.” Gene is a word that Kojima uses often to refer to influential works and ideas he labels as memes, and how they can encourage many people to attempt to listen and understand them.
Lycoris Recoil has been gaining immense popularity as of late. It is the directorial debut of Shingo Adach, character designer and chief animation director of Sword Art Online and Working!!. The anime has now topped the Anime Corner summer weekly charts three times in a row. In an interview that took place after the airing of the fourth episode, Adach encouraged the viewers to reflect on the daily lives of the characters, how they interact with their parents and the answers they will discover along the way.
The spinoff novel will focus on Takina Inoue and Senzoku Nishiki in a story that didn’t feature in the anime. It will focus more on the daily lives of the characters. The novel will involve drama and romance along with a regular dose of gun action, games and monsters. The novel will be released in Japan on September 9. An English release has yet to be confirmed.
