Quick Links

The finale of Hell’s Paradise took a shocking turn when it was revealed in the cave that Gabimaru lost his memories. Gabimaru has reverted to being a cold and efficient killing machine. With no recollection of the connections he formed or the obstacles he overcame, he approaches everything with a ruthless, mission-oriented mindset.

Having lost his emotional attachments, he may treat even his closest allies as disposable assets. This shocking development thrusts Gabimaru into dangerous new territory. Where this robotic version of Gabimaru will go from here and what new threats he will face on the island make for an exciting next phase in this anime.

How Did It Happen?

Sagiri upset while Shion staring at her in Hell's Paradise Episode 13

Episode 13 of Hell’s Paradise marks a pivotal turning point for Gabimaru. Having pushed his Tao abilities to their utmost limits in the climactic battle of episode 12, Gabimaru now finds himself drained and disoriented. As he regains consciousness, it becomes apparent that the overexertion of his tao powers has taken a grave toll.

Gabimaru’s memories are foggy, and his mind has reverted back to his past identity as the most formidable shinobi of Iwagakure. But the damage runs deeper still. Shion explains going overboard and using excessive amounts of Tao rapidly drains you and can even lead to death. Gabimaru experienced one major side effect of this. When Mei looks at him with her Taoist eyes, she notices that the very shape of his Tao energy has been warped, as if the upper half of his head has been sheared away.

This signifies that Gabimaru’s force moral compass has also been critically impaired. The shocking climax comes when Gabimaru fails to remember his wife, the woman whose loss fueled his relentless quest for the Elixir of Life. This loss of memories that humanized him robs Gabimaru of the empathy that once tamed his ruthless ninja instincts. This also aligns with Yuzuriha’s theory that Gabimaru’s wife could be an illusion.

Gabimaru’s Memories May Have Been Implanted

As a fellow shinobi, Yuzuriha understands better than most the immense pressure and control that village leaders exert over their ninjas. She recalls her own restrictive upbringing as a kunoichi, conditioned from a young age to obey orders and serve her village without question. This makes it all the more odd to her that someone as young as Gabimaru would have been allowed to marry and pursue a life outside the village’s narrow definition of duty. Knowing how manipulative and authoritarian these village heads can be, Yuzuriha suspects some foul play is involved.

Perhaps the village chief merely implanted false memories in Gabimaru’s mind to compel his obedience. After all, leaders were known to utilize elaborate psychological tactics and tricks to command unwavering loyalty from their ninjas, even exhibiting seemingly supernatural abilities to reinforce their domination. While all of this rings true to some extent from Yuzuriha’s own experience, she also knows each village has its own traditions and power structures.

Only time spent close to Iwagakure’s leaders and observing their interactions with Gabimaru will reveal the full truth behind this unusual situation. For now, she must keep an open mind, neither fully trusting nor dismissing Gabimaru’s account until she can discern the village chief’s true motives and methods. The path of a shinobi is one of patience, and she must bide her time to unravel this mystery.

Will Gabimaru Regain His Memories?

Sagiri helps Gabimaru with her tao in chapter 51 jigokuraku manga

Fans hope that Gabimaru will return to his senses, at least in the next season of Hell’s Paradise. Sagiri’s special ability to reconstruct people’s Tao could be the key to reversing what’s happened to him. There’s a telling moment in chapter 51 when Sagiri asks, “Who are you?” and gets only Gabimaru’s menacing nickname, ‘The Hollow,’ in response, making it clear he’s far from his normal self.

When Gabimaru violently lashes out at Sagiri, Shion and Fuchi heroically step in to shield her. Sagiri persists in trying to get through to him, but when he shoves her away, she’s forced to take drastic action and restrain him. As a last resort, Sagiri taps into her power to rebuild Gabimaru’s Tao while he’s immobilized.

She implores him that they desperately need the strength he once had. After Sagiri restores his Tao, a flood of memories and emotions come rushing back to him. And he is finally able to get back to his old self again. Given these developments in the manga, it looks like Sagiri will save Gabimaru in season 2 (officially announced). She will not only bring him back from the brink of darkness but also ensure that he can once again lend his formidable skills to the group. Then he can help them all get home.
