Gujarat panel to explore entrance exam for diploma after Class X – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: While the government has appointed a committee to look into the issues arising from the mass promotion to Class X students, there is widespread apprehension about how the issue of giving admission to students planning to pursue engineering diplomas will be resolved.

The committee is looking into the option of conducting an entrance test for students planning to pursue a diploma after Class X, however, there are several challenges in this, said a government official privy to the development.

If a new merit list for diploma admissions is to be prepared based on the entrance test, then this will pose challenge for students from rural areas.

“Last year about 25,000 engineering diploma seats went vacant due to subdued interest from students. This number is only going to increase with an entrance test. There is a lot of participation for diploma seats from rural students. The entrance test may further reduce participation,” said an expert.

Another challenge for the committee is admission to students of Class X to Class XI on merit basis. For schools and students, making choices between science and general streams is not going to be easy.

The committee aims to look into various options and will submit its findings to the state government in a few days. The committee includes DEOs, retired DEOs, officials of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Education Board and representatives of the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), among others.
