Great expectations: ‘Rahul Dravid’s presence will make a difference’ | Cricket News – Times of India

JAIPUR: The great expectations from Team India’s new head coach Rahul Dravid are anticipated. And why not? No denying the fact that the edifice of the Indian team is standing on the solid foundation laid by ‘The Wall’.
Dravid’s hands-on approach during his previous stints as the Under-19 and India A coach, and head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is often credited for the wholesome growth of Indian cricket. The 48-year-old’s keen eye is spot on as well.
“It was during India A tours under Dravid that Deepak (Chahar) was also made to bat, and he did not disappoint. Dravid knows his skill-set and has made use of it, like you all saw during the ODI against Sri Lanka at Colombo in July,” pointed out the seamer’s father Lokander Singh, stressing on his son’s talent with the bat.

Dravid headed India’s coaching staff during the Lanka tour and in the second ODI he promoted Deepak, when chasing 276 the team was reeling at 193/7. The bowling all-rounder’s unbeaten 69 changed the complexion of the match and India took an unassailable lead in the series.
The fast bowler’s father, who is also his coach, is hopeful that under Dravid, Deepak will be looked at as an all-rounder.
“Dravid ke aaney se farak padega (Dravid’s presence is likely to make a difference). Deepak might be groomed as an all-rounder,” Lokander added.
Deepak is also looking forward to working with the ‘humble’ coach all over again.
“I have played under him in 4-5 tours. We all know his work ethic is exemplary and the best part about him is he is approachable. It is so easy to communicate with him as he is always available to listen to the players,” the 29-year-old said.

HOME ADVANTAGE FOR DEEPAK
Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are other available fast-bowling options on board for the India-New Zealand T20I series starting from November 17 in Jaipur, but Deepak feels he has an edge over others.
It was at the SMS Stadium, his home ground, where he started his career on a high with stupendous figures of 8-10 in the first innings of a Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad in 2010-11.
“Yes, I know the nature of the wicket more than anyone else. That’s the kind of advantage you have when you are playing in home conditions. Let’s see if I get a chance to roll my arm here or not on Wednesday,” said the right-arm seamer, who is currently in quarantine along with other India players in Jaipur.
With new energy around, turnaround is on the cards. But what is in store for everyone? Time will tell.
