Google Maps is the most commonly used navigation app by smartphone users. Apple Maps has been improving over the years but it’s still Google that reigns supreme. One of the big reasons why Google Maps is so popular is the host of features the tech giant keeps introducing. Keeping with that trend, Google has announced a set of new features for Google Maps users. Here we tell you five key features that Google Maps users will soon be able to use:
Know the toll rates before your trip
When going on road trips, chances are that you will cross a toll road or two. Sometimes you might feel — but don’t know — that toll might just be too high. To help make a choice between toll roads and regular roads easier, Google is rolling out toll prices on Google Maps for the first time. Users will be able to see the estimated toll price to your destination before they start navigating. Google will look at factors like the cost of using a toll pass or other payment methods, what the day of the week it is, along with how much the toll is expected to cost at the specific time you’ll be crossing it.
Take the toll-free route
In case you don’t want to pay the toll, Google Maps will now tell you when a toll-free route is available, and show you that route as an option. Users have the choice to avoid seeing routes with toll roads completely. Simply tap on the three dots at the top right corner of your directions in Google Maps to see your route options and select ‘Avoid tolls.’
Traffic lights, stop signs in Google Maps
Google is adding more details to Maps. So users will soon see traffic lights and stop signs along their route, along with enhanced details like building outlines and areas of interest. Users will see even more detailed information in select cities, like the shape and width of a road, including medians and islands. This, as per Google, will help users better understand where they are, and help decrease the odds of making last-minute lane changes or missing a turn. Google hasn’t specified if this feature will come to India but did say that the feature will be rolling out to select countries in the coming weeks on Android, iOS, Android Auto and CarPlay.
One of the really standout features of Apple Maps is that it works seamlessly with the Apple Watch. Now, Google is integrating Maps into Apple Watch. Google Maps users who have an Apple Watch willsoon be able to get directions on Google Maps directly from their Watch. Starting in a few weeks, Apple Watch users no longer need to begin navigation from their iPhone. Simply tap on the Google Maps shortcut in your Apple Watch app, and the navigation will start automatically on your Apple Watch. They will further have the option to add the “Take me home” complication to your Watch and tap it to start the navigation home on Google Maps.
iPhone users can now access Google Maps on home screen
Widgets are now an integral part of the iPhone and Google is introducing a new pinned trip widget that lets users access trips they have pinned in their Go Tab right from the iOS home screen — making it even easier to get directions. Users will be able to see arrival time, the next departure for transit trips, and even a suggested route if they’re driving. Google is making the Maps search widget smaller for users to easily search for favourite places or navigate to frequent destinations with one tiny tap.
All these features are expected to roll out in the coming few weeks.
