GIF support comes to Google Chat for these users – Times of India

Internet search giant Google has rolled out the support for sending GIFs in Google Chat on the web. This feature has been made available for all Google Workspace customers, as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers. For this, Google has integrated with Tenor for this. With this feature, users will be able to search for and send GIFs in Google Chat on the web.
Users will be able to notice a new “GIF” icon, which will bring up an expanded window for browsing GIFs. Here, users can find GIFs through search or by filtering on popular categories such as “Trending”.
Specifically for admins, a new setting to control the use of this GIF integration within their organisation has been enabled. Admins can enable or disable this GIF integration in the Admin console by going to Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Google Chat > GIFs. This integration is enabled by default for all customers.
When will this feature be enabled?
Google says that admins will see this setting beginning September 1, 2021, allowing one week to configure the setting before the end user experience begins rolling out.
Once the feature is enabled by admin, users will be able to find and insert GIFs by selecting the “GIF” icon in the Google Chat compose bar.
To recall, it came to light that ‘forced transition’ by Google from Hangouts to Google Chats has not been well received by many users as the app’s rating has been falling. The transition is almost complete for business users and the company has been prompting personal account holders to switch to Google Chat. In the reviews on Play Store, users have been pointing out that Google Chat lacks customisation options, does not support SMS and stickers, that it does not have a dedicated gallery browser for attaching media.
