George R.R. Martin has shared more details about Max’s newly revealed Game of Thrones prequel series, with the working title A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.
Martin took to his blog to share information about the new series. First, the author explained that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is just the series’ working title, but the final title won’t have anything to do with Dunk and Egg. Martin explained that, “Dunk & Egg sounds like a sitcom. Laverne & Shirley. Abbott & Costello. Beavis & Butthead. So, no. We want ‘knight’ in the title. Knighthood and chivalry are central to the themes of these stories.”
Martin said he can’t say much about the series right now, but he did shed some light about how much of the show fans can expect out of the gate.
“HBO has given us a greenlight to film for a full season (not just a pilot), most likely of six episodes… though that is not set in stone, and won’t be until considerably later in the process,” Martin wrote.
Last week, HBO confirmed that the prequel series is officially headed to Warner Bros. Discovery’s new combined streaming service, Max. We already knew that the series is set to adapt Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg.
The original story of these characters takes place over three novellas: The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and Mystery Knight (2010). These three publications were eventually collected in a compilation called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The story takes place about a century before Game of Thrones, when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne. It focuses on a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Dunk and Egg.
Martin revealed that the first season will adapt The Hedge Knight, which tells the story of how Dunk and Egg first met during a tournament at Ashford Meadow. The pilot script was written by Ira Parker, who wrote House of the Dragon’s fourth episode, King of the Narrow Sea. Martin and House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal are on board as executive producers.
Martin said future seasons of the show would adapt The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. After that, things get tricky, as Martin says he has even more Dunk and Egg novellas planned.
“There are… gulp… more of them than I had once thought,” Martin admitted. “There’s ‘The Village Hero’ and the Winterfell story, the one with the She-Wolves, and maybe I need to write that Dornish adventure too to slip in between ‘The Hedge Knight’ and ‘The Sworn Sword,’ and after that there are… ah… more. I just need to finish The Winds of Winter, and then do either A Dream of Spring or volume two of Fire & Blood, and slip in a new Dunk & Egg between each of those in my copious spare time… and that will keep me ahead of Ira and his merry crew… for a few more years.”
Last October, Martin said The Winds of Winter is “about three quarters of the way done,” so it could still be a while until the author gets started on the next Dunk and Egg story.
For now, fans are also waiting for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, which has a potential 2024 release window.
