Gautam Gambhir: The game of cricket needs its moral fabric to stay strong | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir expressed grief at the demise of renowned coach Tarak Sinha, who groomed some of India’s finest cricketers, including Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan and Ashish Nehra.
In his column for the Times of India, Gambhir wrote, “The Saturday gone by saw the demise of cricket coach, Dronacharya awardee Mr Tarak Sinha. He was 71 and was battling cancer. At his cricket club in Delhi, Sonnet Club, Ustad Ji oversaw development of many Delhi and Indian cricketers. The most recent one being Rishabh Pant. Before that the Sonnet Club alumni list included the likes of Ashish Nehra, Aakash Chopra, the late Raman Lamba, former India women’s team captain Anjum Chopra, Atul Wassan, Sanjeev Sharma etc. Some proud Mumbaikars may not like the analogy but Sonnet is Shivaji Park or Dadar Union of Delhi.”
The Indian cricket team on Monday wore black armbands in their final T20 World Cup game against Namibia as a mark of respect to Sinha.
“As a Delhi cricketer I had a number of battles against Sonnet. With Ustad Ji around they always had a good team and of course that swag of a champion. It was nice to see the Indian team turn out wearing black armbands in their game against Namibia. It was their way of paying tribute to the departed soul. I understand from his trainees that he was not only a coach but a father figure to many of them. In return he got immense love and support from players like Nehra and Aakash. I know a little bit of what Nehra has done for his coach but he has always kept it private. I’d respect their privacy and won’t go deeper. May be Nehra should share these aspects of his personality to at least inspire the younger lot,” Gambhir added.
Sinha was battling lung cancer for a while, and recently, he had a multi-organ failure. He was a bachelor and is survived by his sister and hundreds of students.
“Remembering and respecting one’s roots is important especially the way modern day cricket is shaping up. With influx of money there is a good possibility of players losing track. This is where the relationship of the cricketer with his inner circle matters. This inner circle includes a cricketer’s family, his coach/coaches and a handful of friends. I understand that Ustad Ji was in the inner circle of quite a few cricketers. I’d like to believe that his opinion was respected and adhered to. Cricket needs its moral fabric to stay strong,” Gambhir opined.
Gambhir lauded New Zealand cricketers for their conduct on the fateful day of the World Cup final in July 2019 when the Kiwis took the match to the super over but lost on boundary count against England.
“Just on cricket, relationships and fairplay I remember having a chat with Brendon McCullum. I don’t exactly remember why but the topic of our discussion was “IPL Fairplay Award” and its relevance. I mentioned to him that if there was one such award for international cricket then New Zealand would be a resident winner. He smiled and accepted the compliment but added, “we want to be the nice guys who win too!!!” He said it with a smile but I could feel the pain. We all love New Zealand team because they are nice guys on and off the field but as McCullum said they need to win more. I am not sure if any other team would have showed the spirit they did after losing to England in 2019 World Cup final,” Gambhir concluded.
