Another Game of Thrones prequel series, this one based on Tales of Dunk and Egg, is moving forward at HBO’s combined streaming service, which has been rebranded as “Max.”
Currently titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Night, it features a knight named Ser Dungeon the Tall and his squire Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Egg. Here’s the official summary.
A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.
First announced back in early 2021, the new series takes place roughly 90 years before the original Game of Thrones. Steve Conrad joined the series as a writer and executive producer in November 2021.
The new prequel series is based on a series of three novellas released over the course of about a decade: The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and Mystery Knight (2010). As with everything do with Game of Thrones, fans are awaiting news of a potential fourth novella, though of course Winds of Winter still has to happen first.
Writer George R.R. Martin is attached to the series as a writer and executive producer, as is House of the Dragon co-executive producer Ira Parker.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will try and replicate the success of the House of the Dragon, which was a major hit for HBO when it released last year. Season 2 officially kicked off production earlier this week.
There’s no release date for this series based on Dunk and Egg. When it does arrive, it will be on Max, which launches on May 23. You can find more info about the newly-refreshed platform here.
