From Mr. Freeze to Court of Owls, Here Are Some of the Villains That Might Appear in the Batman Sequel

PSA: Major spoilers for The Batman ahead.

The Batman released to great reviews from both fans and critics with praises about the movie’s direction, setting and casting.

While Robert Pattinson gave fans a great portrayal of the Dark Knight, the villains in the movie also stepped up big time with characters such as the Riddler, Carmine Falcone, and Penguin by Paul Dano, John Turturro and Colin Farrell, respectively.

With plans of a sequel in the future, Matt Reeves has stated that he would love to explore the depths of Batman’s Rogues Gallery, and in this movie, he has even set some of them up.

So, based on suggestions and hints from the cast and crew, here are the top 5 Rogues that will most likely appear in The Batman sequel.

Mr. Freeze

21. Mr. Freeze (Batman & Robin)
To the movie’s credit, Batman & Robin had enough foresight to use the rejuvenated version of Victor Fries as he appears in Batman: The Animated Series—a tragic figure on the hunt for a cure for his terminally ill wife. That said, as physically suited as he is for the role, Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t quite have the nuance needed to make the character work in the context of the neon fever-dream that is this movie. The film is chock full of ice puns and hockey-playing goons, and while Mr. Freeze includes the strong emotional elements of TAS, it never puts them to use other than as a convenient plot device.

One of the more interesting suggestions regarding a future villain for Pattinson’s Batman is Mr. Freeze aka Dr. Victor Fries.

Matt Reeves has mentioned that he would love to incorporate a grounded version of the character in a sequel, and it seems like he’s very down to do a villain that hasn’t been explored much in live action.

Court of Owls

Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time.

The Court of Owls is another group of rogues that Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves have expressed their interest in adding to The Batman mythos.

With Gotham being a central focus of the new franchise’s storyline, the Court of Owls is a perfect choice as it would see Bruce Wayne trying to uncover the truths about the city he’s trying to protect.

Joker

Post-Death Metal Batman Books

DC may be consolidating its publishing lineup in 20021, but there will never be a shortage of promising Batman comics on the stands. James Tynion IV is continuing his ongoing Batman run after Future State, with Joker War artist Jorge Jimenez returning for a major Scarecrow storyline. Tynion is also launching the first ongoing Joker comic in 40 years alongside artist Guillem March, with the series showcasing the international manhunt for the Clown Prince of Crime.

We're also very excited for the new creative teams announced for Detective Comics and Nightwing. Mariko Tamaki and Dan Mora will helm the former, and Injustice: Gods Among Us' Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo are on board the latter. In short, the Batman line will be packed with creative firepower in 2021.

The Batman ended with a wild scene featuring Paul Dano’s Riddler and another Arkham Asylum inmate played by Barry Keoghan.

The scene suggested that the character might be Batman’s arch-nemesis in Joker, and Reeves has even confirmed it in recent interviews. While the character has been adapted in live action a lot of times, fans can’t get enough of the Clown Prince of Crime, and they would love to see Reeves’ take on the iconic villain.

Two Face

Ranking the Batman Movie Villains

With the death of District Attorney Gil Colson at the hands of the Riddler, Gotham is on the lookout for a new DA that will help eradicate crime post flooding.

Enter Harvey Dent, who would be looking to assist Pattinson’s Batman in stopping crime. However, there’s a very good chance that he might take the villainous route soon as Two-Face, who would be another thorn in the Caped Crusader’s side.

Bane

26. Bane (Batman & Robin)
If you know the character of Bane from the pages of Batman and Detective Comics, you know that he’s one of the most cunning and intelligent villains the Dark Knight has ever faced; the huge muscles are basically a bonus. But the Bane of Batman & Robin is a far cry from the mastermind of the comics, instead being relegated to a big dumb oaf who is all brawn and no brains, barely able to form words. Batman & Robin as a whole isn’t a fan favorite for many different reasons, but for a movie that came out only a few years after Bane was introduced in the comics and broke Batman’s back, it’s unforgivable to consider this version of him legitimate.

During the final battle against Riddler’s army, a knocked-out Batman injected a green liquid on his leg, which made him quite rageful, with him almost killing one of the henchmen.

Many fans suggested that instead of adrenaline, it seems like the Dark Knight injected Venom which gave him the sudden rush of energy and rage. Venom is also the powerful liquid that Batman rogue Bane has used over the years to remain powerful, and this little nod could be a sign of his future appearance in the franchise.
