During a recent press conference, UFC President Dana White confirmed that a Power Slap video game is in active development. When questioned on the topic of a video game adaptation, White responded by saying “It’s funny you ask that, I did get some information today. We’re close to getting it done and getting it out.”
Slap fighting is a relatively new sport (if you can call it that), where two competitors take turns slapping each other in the face. If one of the two competitors isn’t knocked out after three rounds, the contest goes to a judge’s decision. The judge will then score the fight based on the effectiveness of the slaps, fighter recovery time, and their reaction to being slapped.
In 2022, the UFC ventured into the world of slap fighting by creating the Power Slap brand. Since its inception, the UFC has held three Power Slap events at its Apex Centre in Las Vegas, with the most recent event being just last night.
Although Power Slap has been officially licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, various neuroscientists, athletes, and even congressmen have come out against the idea of slap fighting. Many believe the sport to be a huge health risk and a danger to its competitors due to the forceful impact on the brain with each hit. Unlike other combat sports, such as MMA or boxing, competitors in slap fighting cannot defend themselves when being hit.
Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the sport, it looks like Dana White is still going full steam ahead with the release of a video game adaptation. Details on which studio is developing and publishing the title are yet to be seen, but given that EA Sports have created all of the UFC games since 2014, it’s possible that the UFC will continue its partnership with the studio for the Power Slap video game.
