Forget Bear Sex, Here’s A Baldur’s Gate 3 Biology Lesson Fans Actually Enjoy

Baldur’s Gate 3 has jumped back into gaming’s collective conscious in a shocking display, as a TikTok livestream from the developers of the upcoming RPG was recently cut off due to a video depicting a lovemaking scene between two humanoid characters, one of whom is a druid who had Wildshape transformed herself into a bear.

While the sex scene has the RPG community fired up, with some thinking the stunt hilarious and others feeling thoroughly turned off, one keen-eyed viewer was able to spot a biology lesson the developers at Larian Studios seem to have picked up on, and it seems like it’s a pretty pleasing inclusion for serious roleplaying fans: reptiles don’t have breasts. And just like that fun fact, the dragonborn race as depicted in Baldur’s Gate 3 aparrently don’t have them either.

“The dragonborn in this game are actual lizards and it is amazing,” Reddit user earlvik pointed out in a post on the Baldur’sGate3 subreddit. “You see in most games that have beastfolk, every race has humanlike female shapes, even if those races are lizards, snakes or other non-mammals.” But, as they pointed out, the character creation shown in the recent livestream revealed biologicaly female Dragonron sporting no visible breasts. The post concludes, “Larian shows that while it’s ok to be horny (see the bear scene), it is also possible to respect basic biology. Thank you for this attention to details.”

If you’re not an avid Dungeons & Dragons player, you may only recognize the term “Dragonborn” from The Elder Scrolls. The plot of the fourth installment in that series, Oblivion, was centered around the concept that all the emperors of Tamriel, while not Dragonborn themselves, are descended from the Dragonborn and have carried dragon’s blood in their veins, allowing them to power the Amulet of Kings. When Uriel Septim is assassinated at the beginning of the tale, the loss of the dragonfire produced by the amulet allows the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon to begin flooding Nirn with his demonic hordes. And in the fifth installment, Skyrim, you take on the role of the Dragonborn, mastering lost thu’um shout magic and powering yourself up by absorbing energy from the dragons you fell. Yet you can play Skyrim and take on the Dragonborn mantle as any of Tamriel’s 10 races, not just the lizardlike Argonians.

Baldur's Gate 3 dragonborn

However, the Baldur’s Gate series is set in the Forgotten Realms of the Dungeons & Dragons mythos, in which Dragonborn is a playable race of reptialian humanoid creatures, including “scaled hide and a dragonlike head,” per the D&D Lore Wiki. Still, the question of whether the biological females of the species should have breasts or not is a longstanding topic of debate in the D&D community — and it seems that Larian Studios has picked a side.

The Reddit thread has received a generally positive response, with a lot of comments that point to appreciation for the developers’ commitment to basic reptilian biology. However, one person responding to the thread humorously pointed out that Baldur’s Gate 3 will apparently have “No lusty Dragonborn maids,” an obvious reference to “The Lusty Argonian Maid” series of readable books that appear in The Elder Scrolls games.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been available in early access since October 2020, but the full game has been promised to have five times the content of the early access version. You can pick up the full version for yourself when it becomes available on PC on August 3.
