The combat system in For Honor revolves around three different stances: Up, Left, and Right. When in lock mode against an enemy, switch stances so that the red indicator of an enemy’s attack appears to block the attack.

Beware, some attacks are also unblockable which is shown by the fiery indicator. To avoid this, the player can either dodge or parry an attack. To parry an attack, use heavy attack in the direction of the incoming attack just before blocking it. This will momentarily stun the enemy and the player gains a guaranteed hit in reward.

  • Parrying a heavy attack guarantees a light attack.

For Honor has a variety of factions with each hero having a variety of playstyles. Choosing the one that feels the best for you is key to having a good experience in the game.

Vanguards are all-rounder heroes, the basic knights of the lot. Heavy heroes have a high-risk, high-reward playstyle that can be devastating in the right hands. Meanwhile, Hybrids are somewhat similar to Vanguard, but catered towards a more veteran player base, with additional mechanics and a complicated playstyle. Assassin is the most unique of the bunch, having the most risky playstyle of them all. They are probably the most skill-intensive heroes out of all of them.

7 Practice Against Bots Or Play PVE

Different PvE modes in For Honor

Players can choose a specific game mode to play PvP or PvE. Or alone in practice mode to master hero movesets against a bot.

XP is also earned in PvE, just like in other PvE games, so it isn’t only for practicing, but it also gets the player plenty of hero experience to level up their hero and get new sets of armor.

6 Learn Guard Break And Counter Guard Break

Guardbreak and Counter Guard Break moves in For Honor

Guard break is a powerful yet risky gameplay mechanic in For Honor. By pressing a guard break button, It disrupts an enemy’s guard to create an opener for an attack or throw. This is very useful when the opponent is out of stamina, and the guard break throw will knock down an enemy for an even greater area of attack.

However, guard break can be easily predicted if the player spams a lot, thus guard break can be countered by pressing the guard break button at the right time after being guard broken. Timing is everything as guard break can be perfect if executed at the right time.

5 Mix Up Your Attacks

Moveset Menu in For Honor

Mixing up attacks is a crucial thing to learn in For Honor. Especially against skilled opponents who can adapt to the moves. It isn’t worth spamming random heavies and lights and hoping for the best. When the opponent parries a lot of heavies, use a heavy attack, then feint an attack into a guard break or parry. This will insist the enemy to rethink before parrying.

Light attacks are best for openers. They do significantly less damage but every bit of damage counts. Many hero movesets require light openers to mix up more attacks. Beware, if the player parries a light attack, the opponent will be rewarded a guaranteed heavy attack on the player. So spamming light attacks isn’t the best idea. It’s better to feint heavy into a light attack to confuse the enemy.

4 Keep An Eye On Stamina

1v1 Battle In For Honor

The green bar below the HP bar is called stamina. The more attacks and moves a player performs, the more it depletes. When stamina depletes, the player is tremendously slower, attacks are slow, will be knocked down if thrown, and can’t feint attacks. Keeping an eye on your stamina is crucial.

Watching out for opponent’s stamina is also a good way to make your next move, as some skilled enemies don’t attack for a short time after their stamina is low, so it’s the right time to make a move against an enemy, and some heroes like Jian Jun, who have movesets which allows them to deplete player’s stamina. Bashing works as well, as it depletes stamina too.

3 Play Arcade

Arcade Mode in For Honor

Arcade is a mode that came in with the Marching Fire expansion. This mode features different challenges based on armor levels, and weekly challenges.

To win in this mode, players must win all rounds against specified enemies with either powers or even worse, nothing against strong bots. But this mode does reward XP and rare goods, which can’t be found elsewhere.

2 Use The Customization Options

Customization Menu in For Honor

Heated from battles and want to chill? Designing heroes and relaxing in the lobby is probably for you then. Players can change the gender, and skin colors of specific heroes, design them with patterns, and apply paints, art, tattoos, and effects. This creates a fresh feeling when playing with the designed hero.

Players can also customize their emblems, which can be seen by everyone in the match. It’s a good way to show one’s creativity. The shape of the emblem depends on the faction the player has chosen to be in. Some players chose not to show the emblem so it can be disabled in the settings, and it will appear as the default emblem for everyone.

1 Choose The Right Faction

Faction Rewards in For Honor

Players can choose a faction ranging from The Knights, The Vikings, and The Samurai. This also changes the emblem shape: Diamond shape for Knights, Circle shape for Vikings, and Rectangular shape for Samurai.

This must be chosen, players cannot play the game without being in a faction. After choosing the right faction of choice, there will be a faction war that rewards goods at the end of the season. Players can manually deploy troops to either defend or attack zones in the faction war map.
