Square Enix held on November 5, 2021, the Final Fantasy XIV Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LXVII, where YoshiP most notably teased something for Garo and Tokusatsu fans.
Garo and Tokusatsu introduction
Garo is a long-running franchise of Tokusatsu, literally “special effect shows” in Japanese. It’s pretty similar but different from Kamen Rider. Tokusatsu is a genre also encompassing Super Sentai, which has been truncated in the past by Saban into Power Rangers.
If you’re a fan of Power Rangers, you should definitely check out the original Super Sentai series if you never did. Things got better nowadays, but in the past, the changes in Power Rangers were as bad if not worse as the English dub of the first Yugioh series. Which are pretty much a completely different, censored, and much worse series than the Japanese original.
The Garo gear is coming back in FFXIV
FF14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida mentioned during the stream that many FF14 players want the Garo gear to come back. As such, they started talks to bring back the collab.
Additional details will be coming at a later date. It’s very likely the collab will be coming back at some point in 2022 during an Endwalker patch.
It’s also important to note Garo is mainly popular in Japan and much less known in the West. Though some parts of the series did get localized. Most notably the anime series. As while Garo started as a tokusatsu / live-action series, the franchise now also includes anime. Some of the fans outside Japan also discovered Garo thanks to JAM Project handling its theme songs.
The first collaboration between FFXIV and Garo ended in Patch 5.1 in 2019. Garo-inspired PvP gear, mounts, titles, and achievements were included in FFXIV, but are currently unobtainable.
Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker is launching on December 3 in Early Access, and officially on December 7, 2021.
Garo gear comeback officially announced in Final Fantasy XIV (April 1, 2022 update)
On the Letter from the Producer Live Part LXX stream on April 1, 2022, YoshiP officially announced the Garo collaboration event is coming back. YoshiP again mentioned a lot of newer players really wanted this and kept asking about it in feedback, so he’s happy they were able to bring it back. Moreover, the Garo gear event comeback is right in time for all the new PvP updates in FFXIV and the release of new PvP mode Crystalline Conflict in Patch 6.1.
