The outfits change as he grows and matures, creating the perfect way to keep track of Clive during the time skips.

You will find Clive in three different outfits, each from an important time in his life. These outfits are representative of what Clive was doing at the time that he wore them. The outfit he wore as a young child showcases his duty as a Shield and his youth. The outfit he wears during his time in slavery as a Bearer indicates that time in his life when he wasn’t able to live on his own term. Finally, the outfit he wears of his father indicates the grown Clive that has accepted who he is and what he must do.

Updated by Erin Rice on July 6, 2023: This update adds some relevant information about each of the outfits that Clive will wear on his journey. It also adds some in-text links to help players find more information about certain aspects of the guide.

3 Bearer Clive Outfit

Final Fantasy Clive Bearer

This is the first outfit fans will see Clive in during the events of the game. This outfit is a soldier’s outfit for those within the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. As a Bearer, this is the outfit that Clive had to wear due to his mother branding him as a Bearer after the events at Phoenix Gate. She knew that he would be invaluable to the Empire if he fought for their cause, so she allowed him to live after Phoenix Gate just so he would have to live the way he was forced to while in the army. During this time, he wasn’t even known as Clive, his name was Wyvern. Throughout the beginning of the game, people are quick to judge Clive due to this outfit and what it stands for. He is always assumed to be from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque while wearing this armor.

While this outfit is pretty cool, it is also rather bland. Clive’s outfit isn’t the best at this point in time, but it also isn’t too terribly bad. It does look rather practical for someone in his position. Considering Clive is nothing more than a soldier who is only fighting due to being a slave to his country, it makes sense that he isn’t wearing anything fancy. The Empire wouldn’t want to spend money on armor for soldiers they didn’t care about living or dying. However, when looking at others fighting in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque’s army, there are some pretty cool outfits that Clive misses out on.

2 Young Clive Outfit

Final Fantasy 16 Young Clive

Clive is seen in this outfit much more than in the last outfit. This is the outfit that he wore during his time as a Shield of Rosaria. He was a distinguished fighter for his age, and his father was extremely pleased with his work. Even though he wasn’t the Dominant of the Phoenix, he did have the Blessing of the Phoenix. Since he was a Shield of Rosaria and had the Blessing of the Phoenix, Clive was tasked with being the Shield to his brother, Joshua. This made him well-loved by the soldiers and men that he fought next to. This outfit looks like it was made for the son of an Archduke of the country.

What makes this outfit unique is its look. It truly does look like you would expect. The only problem is that Clive uses this outfit to fight the Beastmen and fight during the events at Phoenix Gate. While the outfit is cool, it isn’t practical for those scenarios in the slightest. The outfit looks as though it would offer no amount of protection whatsoever, being a terrible outfit to wear into battle. This is where the outfit fails in terms of practicality. Clive has several flashbacks to that night throughout the game. This means that you will certainly see this outfit more than the last one. It will be there anytime Clive goes back to the past, as it is a symbol of his childhood.

1 Clive’s Father’s Outfit

Final Fantasy 16 Clive

The best outfit in the game, by far, is the outfit Clive obtains from Hannah Murdock, Lord Murdock’s wife during the events of the present day. She will tell Clive that the clothes belonged to his father, Elwin, long before he took over the throne of Rosaria. Before that time in his life, he was good friends with the Murdocks and happened to have left his clothes there. After the events at Phoenix Gate, Hannah couldn’t bare to get rid of them. She lost her husband Lord Murdock, and her Archduke and best friend Elwin. Even though she assumed both Clive and Joshua died that day at Phoenix Gate, she still kept the clothes.

Clive will wear these clothes from the time he reaches Eastpool and meets Hannah Murdock until the moment that the game ends. Right after obtaining these clothes, Clive and Jill head for Phoenix Gate so Clive can face his past. There, he fights shadow versions of himself and Ifrit, bringing him to terms with what happened all those years ago. These clothes symbolize Clive coming to terms with his past, accepting who he is, and following in his father’s footsteps. This outfit is the best due to what it stands for, the fact that it belonged to Elwin, and because it looks the best out of the three outfits.
