The victory meant the two-match series was shared 1-all, after Bangladesh won the first test in Mt Maunganui.

After making just 126 in their first innings, Bangladesh put up a better fight in their second, before being dismissed for 278 late on day three.

Kyle Jamieson took four wickets, Neil Wagner three, while Tim Southee and Daryl Mitchell took one each. But it was the final wicket of the match that had the loudest cheer.

With fading light and an encouraging crowd, retiring legend Ross Taylor took to the bowling crease and dismissed Ebadot Hossain to end his final test match with a celebration.

Taylor finishes his 112 test career with 19 centuries and 7683 runs, both New Zealand records.

Stand-in captain Tom Latham was awarded player of the match, his innings of 252 setting the foundation for victory.

Latham could not stay out of the action, taking six catches, including the final catch of the game to give Taylor his third test wicket and a perfect send off in front of a joyous Hagley Oval crowd.

Latham joked in the post match interview that being underneath that catch was the most pressure he had felt all game.

Liton Das stood out for the visitors with his second test match century, reaching 102 before being dismissed LBW by Kyle Jamieson.

His knock included four boundaries from one Trent Boult over, and was a lone highlight for Bangladesh in what was otherwise a one sided match.
