Microsoft has provided a big update about the status of upcoming role-playing sequel Elder Scrolls 6. Unfortunately, however, it’s bad news for fans of the long-running fantasy series. As part of Microsoft’s court case with the Federal Trade Commission, Xbox bigwig Phil Spencer was asked about exclusivity plans for Elder Scrolls 6. Spencer said that the Elder Scrolls sequel will be in development for at least another five years and that platform availability is yet to be decided. At the very earliest, this means Elder Scrolls 6 will launch in 2028, roughly 17 years after the release of its predecessor Skyrim!
“It’s many years away, but it’s a game we have announced we would begin working on,” Spencer confirmed (via IGN).
“I think we’ve been a little unclear on what platforms it will launch on given how far out the game is. It’s difficult for us right now to nail down exactly what platforms that game will launch on.
“As I said with Elder Scrolls 6, it’s so far out it’s hard to understand what the platforms will even be at this point.
“It’s the same team that’s finishing Starfield, which comes out this September. So we’re talking about it being likely five-plus years away.”
As some commentators have pointed out, the 17-year gap between Elder Scrolls 5 and 6 is the same as the 17 years it took Bethesda to release the first five games in the series.
The first Elder Scrolls game, titled Arena, launched in 1994, while Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim made its debut in 2011.
Fortunately, however, Bethesda’s imminent RPG Starfield looks like it will keep fans busy for the next few years.
The huge role-playing game launches as a day-one Xbox Game Pass release on September 6.
Players will be able to create a character and explore over 1,000 planets as part of the sprawling adventure.
Bethesda explains more: “Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters and join in the adventures of various factions.”
You’ll also be able to pilot your very own customisable space ship, recruiting an array of crew members to provide it with various perks and bonuses.
