Don’t Expect Starfield-Level Freedom In Star Wars Outlaws

One of the more exciting announcements of the recent Summer Game Fest season was the reveal of Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world (or perhaps open-galaxy) Star Wars game, Star Wars Outlaws, and a recent interview in the latest issue of EDGE magazine detailed a lot more info about the game, including some restrictive aspects of its space exploration.

As transcribed by MP1st, Creative Director Julian Gerighty spoke on the game’s planets, stating that each of them will be so large, it will feel like a “journey” to traverse through them. To be more specific, Gerighty compared the size of one planet to about “two or three zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.”

Gerighty doubled down on previous statements that the game won’t have that many planets, as they have chosen to not procedurally generate any of them. Instead, all of them are going to be “handcrafted.”

This can certainly be seen as a positive thing depending on your gameplay preference. Many gamers were rather put off by the 1000-planet count of the upcoming Bethesda RPG, Starfield, as they felt this would mean that each planet wouldn’t be as content packed or deliberately designed, due to the necessity of procedural generation.

However, another tidbit detailed in this interview regarding space exploration is a bit more on the negative side. Gerighty revealed that players won’t have “total free rein” with how they move between planets. Players will not be able to “freely fly above the planet,” nor will they be able to land their ship wherever they want.

Star Wars Outlaws will instead have “set landing and take-off areas” in each planet. This differs from the previously mentioned Starfield or games like No Man’s Sky, in which you can choose essentially any spot of the planet to land in.

Gerighty also touched on the game’s touted reputation system. Earning reputation for a specific faction will apparently give players access to exclusive quests, better prices in shops, and certain locked-off areas. Furthermore, if your protagonist, Kay Vess, gets on the bad side of the wrong faction, they’ll even send enemies to “chase [her] down.”
