Doctor Strange 2 Writers Weren’t Able to Watch WandaVision Before Finishing Sequel

If it seemed Wanda/Scarlet Witch’s character beats were a little off in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, well, there might be a good reason for that: the sequel’s writers couldn’t watch WandaVision, as it wasn’t finished yet.

Star Elizabeth Olsen revealed as much in a new interview with Vanity Fair where she rewatched scenes from both the Disney+ series and the Marvel sequel.

“It’s a similar arc in Multiverse of Madness that it is in WandaVision. There could be parallels stories being told there of dealing with grief and loss,” she said. “Well, I proposed that to the writers of Multiverse. I said, ‘do you know what we’re doing in WandaVision? Have you seen it?’ And no they had not seen it, because it wasn’t finished yet.”

In regards to how they played out in Olsen’s performance, the actress said she “had to try and play it differently,” even if she was basically working with the same kind of arc in both works.

“I had to attack the same themes in order for it to be interesting for me, I think, and potentially for the audience,” she went on. “I just had to come at it from a different point of view.”

As MCU viewers will know, the changes in Wanda between WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were stark. WandaVision, and Olsen’s performance in it, was widely praised for its complex look at Wanda’s grief as she worked through her losses and trauma, accidentally enslaving an entire town in the process.

“I had to attack the same themes in order for it to be interesting for me, I think, and potentially for the audience.

Multiverse of Madness, however, saw a significantly much more brutal version of the character, though a lot of that can be attributed to adverse effects from the Darkhold.

Olsen, with a few years of hindsight, also poked a little bit of fun at MCU dialogue, remembering a line near the end of WandaVision where she told Paul Bettany’s character, “you are the piece of the Mind Stone that lives in me.”

“That was some crazy shit to say: ‘You are the piece of the Mind Stone that lives in me,’ “ she said. “That’s like speaking in a foreign language where you’re like, ‘This means something, you know. And I have to have to understand the meaning, but it means something.’ And I’m just saying the things I think it means.”

“So I have to translate it for myself,” she continued. “And that this point, she is accepting the fact that no matter what, he will be a part of her regardless of if he’s physically there or not.”

Previously, Olsen said she hopes for redemption for Scarlet Witch, which could come in the reported WandaVision spinoff Vision Quest
