Disney CEO Bob Iger Says Solo’s ‘Disappointing’ Box Office ‘Gave Us Pause’ on Star Wars: ‘We’re Being Very Careful There’

On the heels of news that several planned Star Wars projects are no longer in active development, Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed more conservative plans for future movies in a galaxy far, far away at this week’s Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference.

Citing 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story specifically, Iger said that a “disappointing” box office performance “gave us pause.”

According to Box Office Mojo, Solo grossed a paltry 393.2 million at the worldwide box office, making it the first flop in franchise history. In comparison, the first spin-off Star Wars movie from Disney, Rogue One, grossed over $1 billion, making over $300 million in estimated profits.

“Maybe the cadence was a little too aggressive,” Iger reflected. “We’re going to make sure when we make one, it’s the right one. So we’re going to be very careful there.”

An uneven decade for Star Wars

The beloved space opera series has had a challenging run since its acquisition by Disney from creator George Lucas in 2012. After a very popular first entry with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, The Last Jedi divided fans with high reviewer ratings and low audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes in 2017, while Rise of Skywalker (2019) largely did the inverse by earning poor reviews and high marks from audiences.

Between the main saga’s woes and the high profile flop that was Solo, Disney has since announced then cancelled or gone quiet on a number of would-be follow-ups, including a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.

Other projects, like Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy of films, remain in limbo, as the writer/director’s most recent comments point to scheduling conflicts.

As for Iger himself, he departed Disney before making a surprise return last year. While Star Wars is in many ways still trying to find its identity under Disney, Iger nevertheless praised Star Wars Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and Andor as “extremely successful.”

The Mandalorian’s second episode of the season just aired, which we described as having a “horror mood with a genuinely upsetting enemy.” You can read our full review here.
