After a pretty solid year with The Witch Queen and massive excitement over Lightfall, Destiny 2’s latest expansion just failed to meet the community’s expectations, especially when it comes to story standards. Although Bungie managed to cover the shortcomings of Lightfall in Season of the Deep to some extent, that doesn’t seem to be the real problem anymore, as fans seem tired of the gameplay loop.
Grinding is always a part of MMO titles, and Destiny 2 players accept it as well, but with all the server issues that have happened throughout Season of the Deep—which resulted in players losing progress in activities multiple times—it seems like Destiny 2 community is fed up with the gameplay loop.
Recently, a player asked on Destiny’s subreddit whether players would stick to the game until the very end or just drop it for good. While you can see a wide variety of answers to the question, one single answer that received more than 1,500 upvotes indicates that the story is still important for the community, but the current gameplay loop makes them unlikely to continue playing it—although watching the cutscenes on YouTube is still an option if you want to know what’s going to happen in the end.
“It’s by no means a bad game,” reads the comment. “I’ve just fallen out of love with the gameplay loop. I get on for the main story beats, and I’ll probably play the final shape, but if they drag the main story beyond that then I’ll probably just watch YouTube videos to see what happens.”
The following comments also confirm the game’s time-consuming gameplay loop, as some players call The Final Shape the last DLC they are going to purchase, while some others indicate that they won’t even get the upcoming expansion, as they can eventually find out about the story on YouTube anyway.
“5000 hours in myself,” reads another comment. “I saw the gameplay loop for what it was and decided to free up some time in my life. I will be watching the story through Yt.”
Similar to all MMO titles, Destiny 2 forces players to complete particular activities over and over again to level up and earn new gear and weapons, and while that sounds fun in the beginning, the grind could just wear you down as the progression gets slower when you get past the Soft Level Cap and become closer to the Power Level Cap.
Bungie will fully reveal The Final Shape in a showcase on August 22. The developer already teased a small part of the new expansion in Sony’s latest games showcase, where players meet Cayde-6 for the first time after his death.
