#DilliwaliShaadi: Move over red and pink lehengas, Delhi brides go for kuch hatke

Call it the celeb impact or need to be trendsetter, this wedding season brides in Delhi-NCR are all for trying something different. And saying no to the usual red and pink bridal lehengas, they are scouting for what’s unusual. Bridal shop owners in the city affirm that they are witnessing a surge in demand for bridal lehengas in non-red hues as many want to ditch the traditional shades.

“My wedding is in January next year, and I’ve been on the lookout for a pastel shade lehenga that’s interesting and gets talked about. I loved the one that actor-model Anushka Ranjan wore recently on her wedding. It was so different and refreshing, and I loved the purple shade. I will soon be going to Chandni Chowk to buy one for myself,” says Nidhi Sharma, an IT professional from Dwarka.

“Pehle sab bridal lehenga red aur pink mein hi khareedte the, par ab baaki colours ke lehenge kaafi log khareed rahe hain, even for the wedding day,” says Rohit Goyal, from Keshav Creations in Chandni Chowk, adding, “At least 60% demand badh gayi aise lehenga colours ki iss saal. In fact humne bhi peeche se different colours ke orders badha diye hain because inki inti demand hai aur sale bhi achchi ho rahi hai. Most customers bol rahe hain ki usual colours nahi, thodha hatke dikhaiye.”

It might come as a shock but maroon is completely out, informs Kaamna Malhotra from Lehenga House in Chandni Chowk and Rajouri Garden. She adds, “Brides are going for pastel colours, specially for day weddings. And royal blue is also quite in demand. After Covid, no one wants to spend a huge amount on something that they wear just once, which is usually the case with red and pink lehengas. So that could be a reason to choose different colours that can be worn in the future as well.”

“All this is thanks to designers coming up with new collections,” says Avin Bansal from Kala Shree Regalia in Chandni Chowk, adding, “The trend has changed completely and this is visible from what the designers are putting out in their collections. People who follow them come with us carrying pictures from their photo shoots and say ki ekdum aisa banwa do… Issi colour mein! This way they get a lehenga jiski original cost would be around eight to nine lakh, for much less, and would get to wear something that’s in trend. That’s a pretty good deal for us as well so we are catering to the popular demand. Red ho ya purple, jo customer mangega hum toh wohi arrange karke denge.”
