With powerful nature magic and mighty shapeshifting forms, Druids have a ton of options for skills and gear in Diablo 4. The choices you make mostly depend on what kind of roles you want to fill and activities you want to experience. Leveling up your Druid is a unique challenge, one that can be made much easier with the right set of skills and equipment.
Werewolf builds are great for single targets, but at first they’re as soft as casters. Werebears make for some of the best tanks in the game and can do tremendous AOE damage. However, their single-target DPS is terrible to start. The best build for leveling the Druid is to combine Storm and Earth magic from a distance.
Updated by Chad Thesen on July 15, 2023: The table at the bottom of this guide did state what gems you may want to use, as well as which piece of gear they should be socketed in. However, it did not tell readers what the effects of doing so would be. An additional column has been added that explains the effect of each gem in these sockets.
Best Skills For Leveling
The Storm and Earth build is by far the best for Druids looking to exert crowd control, and it also deals wicked ranged DPS. Wind Shear does decent damage, but its main use is stacking up Spirit gain. Landslide is your bread-and-butter move, capable of extraordinary DPS once you upgrade it to Primal Landslide. Cyclone Armor adds some much-needed protection, plus a bonus knockback move.
You’ll need to get the Wolves Companion Skill, since (even though they do less damage than the Ravens) they are extremely useful for crowd control. Boulder is the best Wrath Skill for this build, especially once you practice lining up enemies and bowling them away. Finally, Cataclysm will turn the tides in bigger fights when Bosses or Elites summon vast armies or use their more powerful moves. There are several Spirit Boons which are perfect for this build.
You’ll get your first Skill Point at level 2, and another every level up after until you reach level 50. This is considered the soft cap since, although you can certainly keep leveling up and increasing in power long after this, you’ll no longer earn new skill points. 10 additional skill points can be earned by increasing your Renown across Sanctuary’s regions.

Best Gear & Stats
You don’t really need to worry about gear right when you start playing. However, it definitely becomes a major factor soon enough. Once you stop leveling up rapidly and start the actual grind, you’ll need to look more carefully at equipment stats and features. Some gear will even give bonus ranks to skills that you often use, which are usually much better than other stats.
Since this is a caster Druid build, your attacks benefit more from having a naturally slower weapon. Staves and two-handed weapons are often better than one-handed weapons paired with Tomes. Unless of course you find some Legendary or Rare pieces with outstanding stats. Here are the essential stats for this build, from most to least important.
Priority Level |
Prioritized Stat |
---|---|
1 (High) |
Bonus Skill Rank, Vulnerable Damage, Core Skill Damage |
2 |
Willpower, Attack Speed, Lucky Hit Chance, Cooldown Reduction |
3 |
Armor, Life, Healing Received, Damage Reduction |
4 |
Intelligence, Damage to Slowed Enemies |
5 (Low) |
Strength, Dexterity, Elemental Resistances, Thorns |
Recommended Aspects
Legendary items in Diablo 4 are mainly available as Aspects. These can be extracted and later placed on Rare pieces of gear, often on multiple item types as well. Aspects are typically more useful for filling out endgame builds such as the Alpha Werewolf. But there are quite a few which are awesome for this Druid leveling build.
If you open your Codex of Power in-game you can find the various Aspects available for Druids. Most can be found in dungeons on the world map, and the Codex even has an option to track the locations of these. Check out our article covering the best Druid Aspects in Diablo 4.

Recommended Gems
You’ll start finding Gems after reaching Level 15, at which point you can socket them into certain weapons, armor, and jewelry. Not all equipment has sockets, but you can have sockets added by a Jeweler for a price. While it’s generally recommended that you save up your Gems in Diablo games, you’ll eventually start to find more powerful Gems in larger numbers anyway.
