One of Diablo 4’s best new features by far is the vast open world of Sanctuary. To make that expanse less daunting, the devs included plenty of towns, villages, and cities. Wherever you are out in the wilderness, there’s sure to be a safe place nearby.
Not all towns in Sanctuary are equally useful though, as the services offered and layout of buildings both vary greatly. After all, how easy it is to get around and what else may be close by are just as important as which shops each town has. Here are the very best towns and cities in Diablo 4, ranked on a wide range of considerations.
10 Backwater
This aptly-named dockside town can be found far to the southeast in Hawezar. Although there aren’t as many civilized places in this swampland region, Backwater has all the services an adventurer could ever need.
Unfortunately, this town is a little too well-named. There simply isn’t much to do in the area around Backwater, with only a couple of dungeons nearby. It’s unlikely that any players would make this a frequent abode in the endgame. But it’s still a decent oasis during Helltides.
9 Marowen
The village farthest to the north in Sanctuary has some interesting locations around it. Marowen just so happens to be situated between two of Scosglen’s three strongholds. There are also several dungeons not too far by mount. So it’s a decent jumping-off point in the endgame as well.
Although it is conveniently located, Marowen is probably one of the ugliest villages in Sanctuary. Like much of the rest of Scosglen, it rains virtually nonstop here. This combines with the low level of development to create a ton of mud, everywhere. And once the strongholds are cleared, Marowen’s location becomes much less important anyway.
8 Bear Tribe Refuge
The Fractured Peaks region is loaded with towns and villages, most of which are home to a great many quest-giving NPCs. The Bear Tribe Refuge is by far the best of them all. Although small, several different quest lines can be picked up or carried on here.
This humble camp also has some adequate services, and provides a somewhat useful Waypoint with several dungeons nearby. But there are still plenty of better towns in Sanctuary, and all of them are surely more impressive to see than this one.
7 Jirandai
Way out on the border between the Dry Steppes and Kehjistan, Jirandai is a town carved from a canyon. There are two strongholds close by, one in each respective region. Additionally, you can find a bunch of dungeons within riding distance, mostly in Dry Steppes.
Jirandai’s geography also makes it one of the best small towns in Diablo 4 for grinding Helltides. But the services it provides simply can’t compete with the bigger cities in Sanctuary. Only there can you store/retrieve equipment or transmog your gear.
6 Cerrigar
Perpetually drenched in rain, Cerrigar is the capital city of the Scosglen region. It has a certain rustic quality reminiscent of ruined fortresses and muddy peasants. But its main services are laid out fairly efficiently, except for the inn being placed in a distant corner of town.
Although other towns in Sanctuary may be more prosperous or better maintained than Cerrigar, its central location in Scosglen still gives it great importance. It just isn’t worth keeping as your home city in the endgame, unless rain and mud are your thing.
5 Denshar
The Fields of Hatred can be a dangerous place, especially for those unaware of the rules there. These are Diablo 4’s PVP zones, where players fight against each other. Although most of the areas highlighted in red on the main map are extremely dangerous, each has a very useful town.
Denshar is located in the Kehjistan Fields of Hatred, on the very northern edge of the dangerous area. It has tons of useful services, including an inn, and is super close to about a dozen different dungeons as well as Caldeum. Altogether, Denshar is just about as useful as the capital cities. Only slightly more dangerous.
4 Gea Kul
Capital of Kehjistan, Gea Kul is the westernmost city in Sanctuary. There’s quite a lot to see around town, from the bustling harbor to the intricately detailed buildings. But while Gea Kul has all the amenities a player could need, it’s all a little too widely spread out.
In addition to services being far apart, there isn’t a lot to do right outside Gea Kul. It’s definitely useful early on for collecting Waypoints and Shrines of Lilith. But its location just isn’t that great for grinding endgame content.
3 Ked Bardu
Ked Bardu is the capital city of the Dry Steppes region, home of the barbarian clans. This place has seen a similar level of fighting as Cerrigar, but alas not quite as much rain. The services here are excellently grouped together, with vendors clustered together intuitively and the inn at the center of town.
This city is also a pretty great spot to grind dungeons from, with several close nearby and quick access to more remote areas. Ked Bardu doesn’t have much to complain about, but there are still better cities in Sanctuary
2 Zarbinzet
Hawezar may be the least populated region in Sanctuary, but its capital is easily one of the best towns in Diablo 4. Zarbinzet may be the size of a small fishing village. But that just means that it has all the services of a capital city clustered together! That makes this town one of the absolute best for grinders looking for efficiency.
Of course, being in the middle of the swamp doesn’t do much for Zarbinzet’s aesthetics. It certainly is not one of the more pleasing cities to look at. But the proximity of services, as well as its useful location in a very hostile swamp, make this one of the best towns of all.
1 Kyovashad
Geographic capital of Fractured Peaks and the current spiritual capital of all Sanctuary, Kyovashad is undoubtedly the most well-developed city in Diablo 4. The World Tier Statue can be found here, as well as the first Capstone Dungeon. So no other city can compete in terms of services available.
Having the inn and blacksmith so close to the Waypoint is a huge point in Kyovashad’s favor as well. Most other services are also not too far, except for the Curiosity vendor. So all things considered, Kyovashad is by far the best town in Diablo 4’s Sanctuary.
