Delhi schools to focus more on competency-based teaching – Times of India

The Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi government has instructed the government and private schools to have at least 40% of competency-based questions in the question papers. To begin with, there will be 40% competency-based questions for classes III to IX and 30% in class XI.

The questions will be increased from the coming mid-term, pre-board and annual examinations. Besides competency-based assessment, the course curricula will also give more emphasis to Deshbhakti, Happiness and Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum (EMC) which was introduced recently by the state government.

Speaking to Education Times, Jai Parkash, lecturer from Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi government, says, “We have been training the teachers to focus on competency-based learning. There will now be more focus on increasing the questions on competency-based learning. These questions will be included in a fixed proportion so that students look beyond rote learning.”

This method will qualitatively enhance the academic graph of students because it will help them to apply the concepts in real life. Teaching through a competency-based model would discourage rote learning among students, which is associated with a low level of understanding of the concepts among the students.

“Competency based questions in the exams will enhance students’ mental and analytical skills. It would also foster critical thinking among students. Students are the change agents and competency-based teaching method is one of the new education pedagogies that they need to be exposed to repeatedly,” adds Parkash.

Subedar Yadav, vice principal, Government Boys Senior Secondary School, B(AH)-Block, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, says, “As competency-based questions will be a major section of the question papers, teachers should be given the training to prepare for the teaching strategy by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi so that they can effectively implement this programme. Currently, the emphasis on teaching through a competency-based method is being implemented in Schools of Specialised Excellence (SoSEs), but still, there are a lot of other Delhi government schools that need to adopt this method of teaching.”

In totality, just about 20-25% of Delhi government schools are currently teaching the students through a competency teaching method, adds Yadav.
