Delhi Metro starts QR-based tickets for passengers: How to use them | Digit

The introduction of QR based paper tokens for the riders comes at a time where Delhi has seen a rise in metro ridership, which is about 47.3 lakh daily riders, since last September. To create a comprehensive ticketing system for the riders the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has introduced the QR based papers which require minimal hassle yet provide a seamless domestic travel. The QR based ticket for Delhi Metro starts from May 08 and is compatible with the latest automatic fare collection (AFC) gate. 

Previously, the DMRC was allotting plastic tokens to the riders however, this transition in the ticketing system will only see an upgrade in the future where the riders may have a mobile application that will help them with the tickets in an efficient mode.

But what are these QR based tickets and what things are to be kept in mind when accessing them? Let us help you out.

What are QR based tickets?

Up until now the Delhi Metro has been issuing plastic tokens for the metro passengers where they use the token to move in and around the Metro station. However, with the increasing passengers the authorities are seeking a new ticketing system wherein the vending machines that have been placed around the stations will be providing a QR code to release a paper which can be used to travel in the rail.

These codes are currently available on the station and soon will be seen on the vending machines as well. The QR based ticketing will start from May 08 and will see an ease of dispensing with limited human intervention. 

As for now, the QR codes for paper tickets are available on the ticket counter and the customer care with the station being equipped with the new system. Currently, one terminal has been established with entry and exit point and supports the paper ticket system and the DMRC assures that by the end of June all the AFC points will support the QR based tickets.

How does QR-based ticketing work and DMRC guidelines?

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has issued guidelines in public interest which need to be followed when using the QR based tickets. Let’s go through them. 

First things first, when a passenger is taking a QR ticket from a station, they are only allowed to enter that specific station and no other station. 

Another interesting fact about the QR based tickets is that they are time-based. If you take a ticket and do not utilise it for the next 60 minutes you are left with a piece of sheet which is now invalid. So make sure you make it to the station in time and use the ticket in time. 

Currently, as the system has just rolled out, DMRC is just providing limited stations with the QR based tickets and slowly and steadily will move to the others. You take the tickets from the vending machines available from Saket to Rajiv Chowk. 

Another thing to remember is that if you get down before your destination arrives you are advised to take a free exit ticket from the QR system as the AFC gates will not respond and you will be stuck. On the contrary, if you miss your destination and are taken ahead you are ought to pay the additional amount and get the exit ticket.

A valid and important note by the DMRC is that the passengers are requested to refrain from using any photos of the ticket and access them for the entry and exit. If any individual is caught doing the same, he/she will be penalised.
