Death’s Door: Every Boss Fight, Ranked

Death’s Door is quite an interesting entry into the genre of soulslike games. Fun and simple top-down movements, melded together with the dodge roll mechanic from other soulslike games, give it a simple yet refreshing feel.

Much like other soulslikes, the boss fights tend to play a very vital role in the game’s story, where it has us chasing down the big bads to receive their souls so we can complete our goals. The game’s bosses are fun and unique, adding their own special move set and a different playstyle to each fight.

8 Demonic Forest Spirit

Demonic Forest Spirit

The first fight of the game and canonically the first mission that was given to the player, the tutorial boss of the game, Demonic Forest Spirit, is a simple and telegraphed fight to get players introduced to the game and its mechanics.

This fight involves dodging simple slam attacks, spin attacks, and the boss slamming themselves into you. After taking a certain amount of damage, the boss stands on its legs until the player can damage them enough. It is not especially difficult, nor is it a boring fight. It is a perfect fight to get the player interested in the game. Not to mention the fantastic music immerses the player well into the fight.

7 Guardian of the Door

Guardian of the Door

The second fight of the game and the first real challenge. Guardian of the Door teaches players to respect the attack distance of the player character and the attacks of the bosses. This is a normal boss with no special lore. This boss has a simple range of attacks. It spins its hands on the ground and slams the area around it.

The challenge to this is that the speed of the attacks is comparatively faster than other enemy attacks. So, it takes a few hits to get used to this speed. After taking some damage, the boss retreats to the back and starts shooting missile-like projectiles in the arena. This part was honestly trivial in comparison, and the player can rack up a nice amount of damage.

6 King of the Swamp

King of the Swamp

King of the Swamp is the second main soul boss of the game. Going into the fight, seeing him introduce himself multiple times beforehand, and the hilariously long name, it feels like the fight would be a challenge, but it’s just a matter of getting into the flow. The boss follows a simple pattern of breaking the platform pieces and allowing the player to damage him afterward.

In the first phase, he makes simple jumps on the platform, which can be easily dodged, repairing the platform afterward. This pattern changes in the second phase, where he jumps from one side to the other, lifting the platform and breaking pieces by sucking them up or shooting down explosive balls. The player can shoot the mace on his back to repair the platform, as indicated in the puzzles for his stage. All in all a very easy and disappointing fight for this stage in the game. Though it is a funny encounter.

5 The Witch of the Urns Grandma

The Witch of the Urns Grandma

Witch of the Urn is one of the 3 main soul bosses of the game who has a huge amount of lore and depth given to her. She is a mother driven by love and the familial instinct not to let more family members die, turning evil in the process.

Her boss fight is fun and challenging, with varying attacks and 3 different attack phases. She has her ranged attacks where she throws urns and teleports in the arena. Her melee attack phase, where she enters her urn and jumps around, trying to slam into the player. Lastly, her radial attack phase, where her attacks can be easily deflected. Her attacks are fun and intuitive and require the player to deflect them actively.

4 Betty

Betty

Betty is the third and last main soul boss of the game. She is a yeti monster who lives on top of the great mountain. Betty has fast aerial and ground slam attacks which require fast dodge timings. After taking a certain amount of damage, she starts rapidly rolling in the direction of the player until she hits the arena border.

These attacks continue until the player damages her enough that she starts making damaging snowballs fall from her slams. She is fast and requires the player to have quick reactions, preparing them for the fights ahead.

3 The Grave Digger

The Grave Digger

The gravedigger is one of the first NPC characters the player meets. He challenges the player to try to kill them when strong enough, which lets the player know to come back after the end. He is completely optional and only required for 100% completion.

His attacks are easy to dodge, and the fight is quite straightforward. In his last phase, he goes into range attack mode to scare the player into spam dodging. At this point, the player has enough upgrades to kill the boss easily. The Satisfaction of this boss fight comes from it being a secret boss fight that requires the player to explore beyond the final boss fight.

2 Lord of the Doors

Lord of the Doors

The final boss of the game, to no surprise, is a giant with a keyhole for a head. His fight is a cinematic two-part fight with checkpoints in between. He takes the player through all the previous arenas and some portions of the hall of doors while adding moves to his attack set. In between the arenas, there are portions of running sequences.

After all this, the player faces his final form in front of the vault of souls. His attacks consist of slams, rolls, and ranged attacks copied from the previous enemies and bosses of the game. Some of his moves are very annoying to deal with, as they seemingly have no counterplay.

1 The Grey Crow

The Grey Crow

Maddened due to his soul being corrupted, The Grey Crow turns feral and starts attacking the little crow. The penultimate boss fight of the game, and the most scenic one, is the fight against the old crow. A beautiful white backdrop and the grey-colored crow, plus the beautiful background music, make this monotone fight a sight to behold.

The Grew Crow moves towards you, damaging you if contact is made. Every attack on him summons projectiles that chase the player. These can be deflected to do massive amounts of damage to the boss. His attacks also include dashes and a beautiful black hole attack. The best part of this fight is the story reveal tied to it. This and the beautiful aesthetic of the fight make it the best fight in the entire game.
