Dead Mount Death Play Premiere Review

Dead Mount Death Play Episode 1 is streaming on Crunchyroll and Ani-One Asia.

Dead Mount Death Play released its first episode on April 11, and it has already gotten viewers hooked. Based on the manga by Ryohgo Narita, the anime has a very similar vibe to well-loved shows such as Durarara and Baccano, his other works.

While the initial impressions gave a very Battle Royale and typical death game vibe, Dead Mount Death Play is actually very different.

The story is about the battle between a legendary hero, Shagrua — also known as the “Calamity Crusher — and the necromancer Corpse God. The episode begins with their epic battle as the both of them go back and forth using their various skills and magical abilities. However, something unexpected happens, and we are transported to the modern world, Shinjuku specifically, where there is no such thing as magic users or fantastical creatures.

Meanwhile, a boy named Polka Shinoyama wakes up feeling different, who is now our protagonist (or at least his body is). He then comes across an assassin who is a crazy, yandere girl who is hell-bent on killing him, and we don’t know why.

The first episode did a great job of subverting expectations. I am not trying to spoil it for anyone, but Dead Mount Death Play left me wanting to learn more about the world and the characters. The setting itself is quite interesting, and the show plays with the regular isekai tropes, which turns out to be a breather among all the endless generic isekai anime out there. There is a lot of gore with multiple deaths, decapitations and blood spilling everywhere in the episode though, so keep that in mind.

Dead Mount Death Play is not your regular isekai show that you should check out

Geek Toys is the studio behind Dead Mount Death Play, which is known for shows such as Plunderer and Date A Live. The animation is decent enough, but the music stood out to me. There seems to be a lot of electronic music used throughout the episode, which went well with the vibe of the episode. All in all, Dead Mount Death Play is not your regular isekai show that you should check out, as it may fly under the radar of many this Spring 2023 season.

While it’s not the most visually stunning anime this season, and also includes some not-so-flattering CGI here and there, Dead Mount Death Play is worth taking a look at if you love Durarara and/or Baccano or wanted to give any of his works a shot. For those who have not heard of the author, take a look at Dead Mount Death Play for its edgy, dark fantasy vibe that mixes humour with some cool character abilities.
