County stint will be a great learning curve for Umesh Yadav: Subroto Banerjee | Cricket News – Times of India

NAGPUR: Within a week of the fifth Test against England ending at Edgbaston, India speedster Umesh Yadav began his first-ever English county stint on Monday.
The announcement of Yadav’s inclusion was made by Middlesex just before their match against Worcestershire, which began on Monday. He was drafted into the Middlesex playing XI with immediate effect. Middlesex are batting first in the 4-day fixture.
The 34-year-old Nagpur pacer replaces Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi for the remainder of the English domestic season. Shaheen has left for national duties. The season includes the remainder of the prestigious County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup.
For Yadav, who warmed the bench in the England Test, and is not in the current white-ball scheme of things for India, the Middlesex signing is a good opportunity, feels his coach and former Indian pacer Subroto Banerjee.
“This is a big development in terms of gaining experience in a highly competitive championship. Things like small grounds, fluctuating weather and playing as an overseas pacer for a quality county side will be a great learning curve for him,” said Banerjee, who is the bowling coach with the Emerging India camp at NCA, Bengaluru.
“Players like Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan and others have benefited from playing county cricket. I am sure this will be a big plus for Umesh,” Banerjee added.
Yadav, who has played 52 Tests, 77 ODIs, and seven T20Is, is the eighth Indian pacer to play for a County side. Srinath made his county debut in 1995. Before Yadav, Varun Aaron, Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth, RP Singh, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar and Srinath have played for different county sides.
This season, four Indian cricketers have been signed by county teams. Apart from Umesh and Pujara, all-rounders Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya are likely to play for Lancashire and Warwickshire.
