Cotton University throws open UG, PG courses to Covid orphans under special quota – Times of India

GUWAHATI: The Cotton University (CU) on Tuesday notified that they would admit to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses students who lost their parents to Covid-19.

Even though admission at the leading state university was almost over in October, a notice issued by the CU academic registrar, SK Dutta, said such students would be admitted under a special provision.

Though CU is not certain about the number of applicants for the Covid-19 quota, the notification said that for a few seats for UG and PG first semester admission 2021-22, applications will be invited in plain paper with November 15 as the deadline.

“The application must be accompanied by a medical certificate mentioning Covid-19 infection as the cause of death of one of the parents of the candidate,” read the notice.

Dutta said the best students from the quota application would be selected.

In UG and PG, about 1,200 seats were filled up recently but some more seats under extra-curricular activities and reserved quotas are in the process of being filled up. In the Covid-19 quota, a total six seats in UG courses, three each in BA and BSc, will be filled up. Dutta said they are yet to decide on the number of seats for PG.

Amid the second wave, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had launched the special scheme of offering Rs 2.5 lakh to women, who had lost their husbands to Covid. But there was no policy to support the students.

“When we are offering admission under various quotas within the extracurricular category, why not reserve a few seats for the students who lost their parents due to the pandemic? We can proudly say that it’s a unique initiative of our university,” Dutta said, giving credit to CU VC, Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, for adding the new quota.

“Applicants who lost their parents during 2020 and 2021 are eligible for this quota,” stated a previous notice from the university. These quotas will not be applicable to any of the self-financing UG programmes and BA in Liberal Arts.
