Connecting the Broken Chain of Supply: NITIE’s initiative to connect with Truck drivers – Times of India

Truck drivers are known to facilitate demand and supply through their efforts. They drive relentlessly through thick and thin to reach various destinations accomplishing supply chain connections. However, various undercurrents such as social insensitivity, poor image, and lack of recognition in society push truck drivers back. These undercurrents disconnect them in the otherwise well-connected supply chain. As a result, the drivers are left with apathy and a lack of awareness to resolve several issues they face.

National Institute of Industrial Engineering, also known as the mecca of the supply chain, realised these undercurrents. The Institute has initiated a project, “Apoorthi Shrankla kay Saarthi” (Drivers of Supply Chain). Under the guidance of Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Director, NITIE, a team visited the field to interview truck drivers and experts. Prof. Nikhil K Mehta produced and directed the research-based documentary film ” Apoorthi Shrankla kay Saarthi”. The documentary film demonstrates experiences of how truck drivers work under harsh conditions and face various problems. Mumbai Port Trust Dock & General Employees Union supported this initiative of the Institute. The problems of the truck drivers were presented to the experts to seek solutions. The documentary film paved the pathway for future actions and shall serve as a case study to several supply chain enthusiasts.

NITIE’s first outreach programme was initiated at Mumbai Port Trust Dock & General Employees Union, Cotton Green, where the documentary film ” Apoorthi Shrankla kay Saarthi” was shown to the truck drivers. Prof. Shankar Murthy, our safety expert, conducted the awareness programme for the truck drivers. Adv. Shri S.K. Shettye, Chairman and Shri Sudhakar R. Apraj, General Secretary, Mumbai Port Trust Dock & General Employees Union, boosted the morale of the participants. Prof. Vivekananda Khanapuri, Dean (Sponsored Research and Industry Connect), discussed the outreach activities undertaken by the National Institute of Industrial Engineering. The social initiative taken by the NITIE will support truck drivers in seeking awareness, recognition, and initiating sensitivity towards them. In addition, our programme shall include safety awareness camps for the support of truck drivers and their family members. The focus on the lives of truck drivers will support truck drivers and enlighten all stakeholders benefitting business and taking proud India towards Atmanirbhar and Surakshit Bharat.

Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari (FNA, FNAS, FME FISE, and FILT) has taken over as the Director, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, on November 05, 2019. He has published more than 307 papers in the International Journals of repute and has been rated as Rank 1 among the top 100 individual researchers worldwide in the Production and Research by Taylor and Francis.
