chrome: Government to Google Chrome users: Update your browsers right away – Times of India

Google has rolled out the second major update for Chrome browser. The update addresses a zero-day bug that the Indian government issued advisory for. Recently, Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), under the IT ministry, issued a high severity warning for Google Chrome browser users. The warning is for the users who are using browser’s version prior to 99.0.4844.84. As per the warning, a vulnerability has been reported in Google Chrome which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.
The advisory further reveals that “this vulnerability exists in Google Chrome due to a type confusion error within the V8 JavaScript engine component. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted webpage, trigger type confusion error and execute arbitrary code on the targeted system. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and take control of the targeted system.”
To avoid any exploitation through the zero-day bug, the CERT-In wants Google Chrome users to update to version 99.0.4844.84.
What is a zero-day vulnerability
A zero-day vulnerability is a type of computer-software vulnerability that has been disclosed but still not patched. This makes it easy for hackers to exploit. Any vulnerability receives a zero-day rating when it is known to hackers and it is being actively exploited. To avoid such hacking attacks, it is important to keep your apps and devices updated.
