Chris Pine Vents Star Trek Frustrations: ‘Feels Like It’s Cursed’

Sorry, Trekkies. Chris Pine is just as clueless (and frustrated) about what is happening with the next Star Trek film as you are.

The actor, who plays Captain James T. Kirk in the reboot franchise, recently told Esquire that he hasn’t heard any news about the long-delayed Star Trek 4.

“I don’t know anything,” Pine said. “In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before actors.”

In February 2022, franchise producer J.J. Abrams announced a fourth Star Trek film, much to the cast’s surprise. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Pine and his co-stars Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, and John Cho were not aware that Paramount was moving forward with Star Trek 4.

“I would say it’s frustrating,” Pine said about being kept out of the loop. “It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created — I just can’t do it. I don’t have the energy.”

A troubled project

Star Trek 4 was slated for a theatrical release on Dec. 22, 2023, with WandaVision director Matt Shakman attached to the movie. However, Shakman left the project to film Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot, followed by Paramount removing Star Trek 4 from its upcoming film slate altogether. The last installment, 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond, disappointed at the box office with $344 million worldwide.

In his Esquire interview, Pine criticized how Star Trek movies are forced to compete with Marvel’s box office numbers.

“I’m not sure ‘Star Trek’ was ever built to do that kind of business,” he said. “I always thought, ‘Why aren’t we just appealing to this really rabid fan group and making the movie for a good price and going on our merry way, instead of trying to compete with the Marvels of the world?’”

After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton [Yelchin]…passed away, I don’t know, it just seemed . . . feels like it’s cursed.”
