Chris Evans has just addressed the chances of him returning as Captain America for the planned Avengers: Secret Wars movie. Chris Evans played the role of the first Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, that iconic mantle has passed on to Anthony Mackie who portrays Sam Wilson.
However, fans who have been watching MCU since its start would love to see Evans don the role once more, or just return for a brief cameo. Naturally, Evans was quizzed about the same in an interview with AP Entertainment.
Evans took this chance to say that he loves the role and that’s precisely why he doesn’t want to come back to it. He added that he doesn’t want to return just for the sake of returning as it can potentially damage the legacy he left behind.
“It’s not annoying at all. I love that role. I love that chapter of my life. And it’s because of that love that I’m apprehensive of doing anymore, because I’m just so precious about it, you know? You don’t want to tarnish this great thing that I got to be a part of,” said Chris Evans.
It’s true that Evans was indeed part of a ‘great thing’, he left the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a happy ending for his character as Steve Rogers got reunited with Peggy Carter, the love of his life in Avengers: Endgame.
Evans had also passed the mantle of Captain America onto Sam Wilson. If Evans were to return as Captain America again, it would either be too soon of a comeback or it will just take the limelight away from Sam Wilson.
Both of those scenarios would be one to avoid for Marvel, who are currently working to build a future with newer superheroes.
However, Marvel has opened the door to Multiverse and time travel. That allows them plenty of leeways to bring Evans back without tarnishing the legacy he has left behind, and while ensuring that the story told through Evans does not take away credit from Sam Wilson’s journey and his new role.
