China Considering Stricter Restrictions for Young Gamers: Report

China is reportedly looking to restrict the time allowed for playing online games for children. The government is said to be looking at new measures to further protect minors.

This comes from a report by the South China Morning Post. China already has restrictions in place when it comes to online gaming. Currently, players under 18 can play online video games for three hours on weekends and holidays. But it seems like the government thinks that is not enough.

At a recent two-day conference in Guangzhou, Ao Ran, the secretary general of China’s Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association, talked about implementing further restrictions on gaming for minors. He called the protection of minors “long-term and fundamental work.”

China first implemented restrictions on online gaming in 2021 for the protection of minors. Game developers must follow China’s rules to sell their games in the region. Ao has even proposed making use of facial recognition technology to ensure compliance.

On the other hand, the Indian government recently made it clear that it has no plans on limiting video game time in the country for now. However, it is still confused between terms such as “online gaming” and “gambling.” The Indian video games and esports industry also recently banded together to ask the government to distinguish between video games and gambling apps.
