HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pujara has not scored a century since January 2019
  • He came close to breaking that run in the series in England this year
  • India’s two-Test series against New Zealand starts on February 25

Cheteshwar Pujara has not scored a century since January 2019 but came close to breaking that drought in the recent series against England. Pujara scored 91 in India’s second innings at Headingley, falling to Ollie Robinson just nine runs short of his 19th Test ton.

The 33-year-old then went on to score a rather aggressive 61 off 127 balls in India’s second innings in the fourth Test and said that he will be looking to carry forward that approach in the upcoming two-Test series against new Zealand.

“My mindset was different in the England Test series, I was a lot more fearless. There was not much change in technique. So far preparations for the New Zealand series has been good and I’ll look to carry that same fearless mindset against the Kiwis as well,” Pujara said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday. He said that he is not worried about the lack of centuries.

“I have been contributing with 50-60 runs. As long as I play well, I am not worried. It will come,” he said.

With Virat Kohli sitting out in the first Test, Ajinkya Rahane will be India’s captain and Cheteshwar Pujara is the vice-captain. He said that the added responsibility can be good for him but the situation won’t be too different to how it normally is.

“Added responsibility can be good and can sometimes work in your favour. Even as a senior player in the side, I used to share my inputs with the think-tank regularly,” Pujara said.
