Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey has tested positive for Covid-19 in Delhi, just over a day after bowling coach L Balaji and a bus cleaner contracted the virus. Hussey’s sample, however, will be sent for a retest to rule out the possibility of a false-positive result.
The news of Hussey’s positive test result came just hours after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indefinitely suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 but CSK conducted another test to confirm the results.
“We’ve spoken to Mike today. He is in good spirits,” Todd Greenberg, the chief executive of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, said. “His symptoms are relatively mild. He is in a stint of isolation in his hotel room…he has good support systems around him.”
IPL 2021 was being played inside bio-bubbles across 6 major cities in India – Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. But the bubble was breached and players started testing positive this week leaving the BCCI with no other choice but to suspend the T20 league with immediate effect.
Only 29 games were played in the 60-match tournament till Sunday, IPL 2021 was scheduled to be played until May 30. The BCCI is set to lose between Rs 2000-2500 crores for the midway postponement this season.
Hussey is the 7th person associated with the tournament to have contracted the virus during IPL 2021.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) duo Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier were the first two players to test positive for Covid on May 3. The news prompted the organizers to reschedule KKR’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.
Just hours later, CSK bowling coach Laxmipathy Balaji and a bus cleaner also tested positive the same day.
May 4 brought more bad news for IPL 2021 as Sunrisers Hyderabad wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi Capitals leg-spinner Amit Mishra also tested positive for coronavirus.
Andrew Tye (Rajasthan Royals), Liam Livingstone (RR), Adam Zampa (RCB), Kane Richardson (RCB) and Ravichandran Ashwin (DC) had already left IPL 2021 mid-way into the 14th edition amid the worsening Covid crisis in India.
